The Supreme Court of the Philippines ruled on an administrative case against attorney Roque Santiago for malpractice. Santiago advised a client, Ernesto Baniquit, that he could get a legal separation from his wife Soledad in order to marry another woman. Santiago prepared a document for the couple stipulating they could marry others. However, this advice was contrary to law. While Santiago claimed he realized his mistake, prepared a cancellation, and meant no harm, the court found he was negligent in his legal advice. The majority suspended Santiago from practicing law for one year, while some members felt he deserved disbarment.
