O
N the twenty-sixth of November in 1897, Mrs. Eddy
wrote in a letter to Julia Field-King, "People seem to un
derstand C.S. in the exact ratio that they know me and vice
versa. It sometimes astonishes me to see the invariableness of
this rule." In March of 1907 when Joseph Pulitzer of the New
York World was spearheading an attack and a lawsuit against
the Revelator to this age, she said to a student, "The papers
are writing up my history; the history of my ancestry; writing
lies. My history is a holy one."
For many years the author has been seeking to know Mrs.
Eddy and to learn her holy history. Though she feels she has
little more than begun on this vast search, it has been reward
ing beyond expectations. This research has convinced her that
an understanding of the trials and triumphs of Mary Baker
Eddy is essential for those who "would enter by the door."
The publication of these pages is a small, partial payment
toward the great debt we owe to the Discoverer of the Science
of Man.

A REMARKABLE BEGINNING

ARL Y in the nineteenth century there was a man sent
from God whose name was Henry David Thoreau. He
was not that Second Coming of the Christ that Henry David
Christians were expecting, but he came to bear Thoreau horn
witness to a life divine entirely apart from mor- .July 12. H;]7
tal existence. His was the voice of one crying in the wilderness
saying, "Can a man feed and clothe himself gloriously, who
keeps only the truth steadily before him? who calls in no evil
to his aid'?"
There abode in the same country (which was the New Eng
land section of the United States of America) in the nearby
state of New Hampshire, a devout woman of Puritan ancestry
named Abigail Ambrose Baker. Her husband, Mark Baker,
was an upright man and just. The ancestors of both husband
and wife were Israelites, though they knew it not. As were all
the white Christian people who settled and founded New Eng
land, they were truly the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Abigail had borne five handsome children,~Samuel,
Albert, George, Abigail, and Martha,~and she was a dutiful
and devoted wife and mother. But in the spring of 1821 her

thoughts were troubled. According to mortal law she was be
yond years for child-bearing; yet, like Sarah, wife of Abraham,
she was expecting a child. Could this be the child of God in
stead of Mark and Abigail Baker?
One morning while climbing the narrow stairs to the attic
where the wool was kept for spinning, she was suddenly filled
Abigail's with a sense of light, power, and dominion. The
exaltation attic room became radiant with glory, and the
devout thought of this saintly woman was reassured. But the
religious training and the concepts of that day conflicted with
her exaltation, so that it, too, troubled her. She confided in a
neighbor, Sarah Gault, and these two women prayed together
repeatedly and earnestly. Even though fearing that it might be
blasphemous, Abigail could not keep from the thought that
this child was holy and consecrated and set apart for wondrous
achievements.
On the sixteenth day of ,July the days were accomplished
Birth of that she should be delivered, and she brought
Mary Baker forth her sixth child, a beautiful daughter; and
,July 16, 1821 they called her name Mary Morse Baker.
Baby Mary was the special charge of her aged grandmother,
albeit she was beloved by all the family including numerous
aunts, uncles, and cousins on neighboring farmsteads. Though
this sweet, adorable child was loved by all, Abigail and Mark
knew that she was unlike other children, even her own brothers
and sisters.
When she was tiny, still sleeping in a trundle bed in her
parents' room, she would call to her father who was reading in
Second the parlor: "Father, I know what you are doing.

answer, "Hush, child, go to sleep." Then Mary would reply,
"I'll read it to you." And from the trundle bed in the dark bed
room she would tell him what he was reading, although she
could not pronounce the long words.
At one time the oldest boy, Samuel, severely injured his
leg while chopping wood with an axe. After several days in
bed, the wound refused to heal, and the family had begun to
despair for the boy's life. Mark picked up little Mary, ap
proached the bed, turned aside the covers and gently placed
Mary's hand over the wound, holding it there for some little
