TO THE USER
Vanzelfsprekend is a complete Dutch language study package. It can be used as a
self-study course or for the classroom approach.
Vanzelfsprekend is a thorough and comprehensive course that covers the complete
range of skills needed: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The supporting
material reflects everyday life in Flanders.
The obvious advantage of Vanzelfsprekend is that the user can study at his own pace.
The study package design is systematic and well-organised, consisting of units that
can be covered In one session. We advise adherence to the order presented. The
built-in reference system will automatically lead the user through the whole course.
Basically the course is divided into 2 main sections of 5 parts each. Parts I to 5
provide an elementary vocabulary of some 1000 words and the basic Dutch
structures. Parts 6 to 10 present all the language functions, grammar and another
1000 words to help the user to an intermediate level.
The course requires no external supplementary material to cover the range of
language functions and skills up to an intermediate level.
I VIDEO
The Video is conceived as a tv-show and functions as the first step in the learning
process. It contains three sections smoothly integrated by a presenter.
1. a soap introducing the new speech acts and vocabulary in natural contexts;
2. a grammar section that serves as an introduction to the structural aspects;
3. a documentary section which focuses on some socio-cuitural aspects of Flemish
and / or Belgian society.
The video session is to be repeated several times. After the first presentation it is not
yet necessary to understand each and every word. The video comprehension exercise
complete with key introducing each new part In the Workbook will indicate whether
you have understood enough to tackle the next part in the Textbook. At the end of a
part, however, you should be able to understand everything contained in the video
session. II
II TEXTBOOK
The Textbook contains 10 parts of 7 lessons each. The lessons are further subdivided
into smaller units. Each unit contains either dialogues or a text. The dialogues have
been recorded on accompanying cassettes. They can be used for listening
comprehension practice but also as examples for imitation.
Each unit is followed by summary boxes. There are four kinds of summary boxes:
Speech acts.
These are highly frequent formulaic expressions e.g. to say hello 'Goedemiddag.
Hoe gaat het ermee ?' or to apologise 'Het spijt me.' etc.
Grammar.
The use of tenses, word order etc.
Words
which may present problems to the non-native user: e.g. the use of 'of' and
'a!s' in Dutch, the use of verbs like 'staan', 'liggen', 'zitteri and 'hangen' etc.
Language functions.
These are different ways to get or give information about occupation, address,
origin, opinion etc.
The summary boxes are designed for study. Following the summary boxes you are
referred to the Workbook.
At the end of each lesson a word list is offered containing the target vocabulary of
that lesson.
Ill WORKBOOK
For every unit in the Textbook, there is a corresponding unit in the Workbook.The
units in the Workbook review and practise the language from the Textbook.
The 10 parts are each supplemented by a highly diversified revision section which
mainly focuses on the current part but also covers all preceding material.
The Workbook contains interactive exercises to promote communicative fluency, a
variety of vocabulary exercises, grammatical exercises and extra practice in listening
comprehension and reading comprehension.
The texts of the interactive fluency exercises and the comprehension exercises are
recorded on the accompanying cassettes. An gsg icon refers you to the cassette at
the appropriate moment.
The Workbook reviews and extends the topics in the Textbook and implants new
items which are later dealt with. Some additional vocabulary, for comprehension
only, is added in the workbook sections. This additional vocabulary is aimed at
incidental vocabulary acquisition.
Some extra exercises are optional. Others are games. As they are not strictly
necessary steps in the procedure, they either receive an optional icon ojl or a
game icon ^ ¡ > , indicating their redundant character /IIIIWWWW
As the course is primarily designed as a self-contained study package, all keys to the
exercises are to be found either at the end of the workbook or on the cassettes.
IV CASSETTES
The audio cassettes are meant for repetitive practice. They may help you to acquire
the appropriate pronunciation and intonation in Dutch. Try to imitate the recorded
material as closely as possible.
The audio casssettes contain the dialogues of each lesson. Occasionally interactive
exercises to promote communicative fluency and some listening comprehension
exercises are added.
V GLOSSARY
A glossary which serves as an informative dictionary completes the course. In the
glossary the English translation of all the words and / or contexts that illustrate their
use and meaning are given.
VI APPENDICES
The Textbook is supplemented by practical reference appendices and two registers.
There are 4 appendices.
Appendix 1 contains all irregular verbs, arranged alphabetically according to their
infinitive form.
Appendix 2 contains all irregular verbs, arranged according to their past participle.
Appendix 3 contains all irregular verbs, arranged according to their past tense.
Appendix 4 contains the grammatical terminology used in the course, illustrated by
typical examples.
The Registers contain a list of all grammatical items and a list of all speech acts.
VOOR DE GEBRUIKER
Vanzelfsprekend is een totaalprogramma om Nederlands te leren. U kunt het
gebruiken als zelfstudiepakket of in de klas. Aanvullend lesmaterlaal hebt u niet
nodig. Alle taalvaardigheden - luisteren, lezen, schrijven en spreken - komen erin
aan bod en u krijgt ook een interessante inleiding in de Vlaamse samenleving.
Het grote voordeel van Vanzelfsprekend is dat u kunt studeren op uw eigen tempo.
De leergang bestaat uit kleine eenheden, die u in een keer kunt afwerken. U begint
met de eerste aflevering van het videoprogramma en vanaf dan wijst het ingebouwde
verwijssysteem u de weg.
De cursus bestaat uit 10 delen. De eerste 5 brengen u de basisstructuren van het
Nederlands bij en een elementaire woordenschat van ongeveer 1000 woorden. Deel
6 tot 10 maken u vervolgens vertrouwd met de taalfuncties, grammatica en
woordenschat die u nodig hebt op een intermediair niveau.
I VIDEO
U begint een deel met het bekijken van een aflevering uit de videoserie. Elke
aflevering is opgevat als een televisieprogramma en bestaat uit 3 onderdelen:
1. een onderhoudende soap, waarin de nieuwe taalhandelingen en woordenschat
in een natuurlijke context worden aangeboden;
2. een taalonderdeel, waarin enkele van die nieuwe taalhandelingen en de
belangrijkste grammaticale punten visueel worden voorgesteld;
3. een körte reportage, waarin een interessant aspect van de Vlaamse en / of
Belgische samenleving wordt belicht.
De 3 programma-onderdelen worden door een presentator aan elkaar gepraat.
De eerste keer dat u de aflevering bekijkt, probeert u gewoon de grote lijnen van wat
u ziet en hoort te volgen. De comprehensie-oefening in het werkboek, waarnaar u
wordt verwezen, stelt u in Staat te controleren of dat is gelukt.
Aan het einde van elk deel bekijkt u de aflevering opnieuw en moet u er elk woord
van begrijpen. Zo kunt u testen of u klaar bent om het volgende deel aan te pakken.
Aarzelt u bij het bekijken van de programma's niet om de pauzetoets te gebruiken
wanneer u dat nodig acht.
II TEKSTBOEK
Nadat u de eerste keer het videoprogramma hebt bekeken en de comprehensie-
oefening hebt gemaakt, komt u terecht in het tekstboek. U zult merken dat elk deel is
onderverdeeld in lessen en elke les in kleine eenheden. Zo'n eenheid zou u in een
keer moeten proberen af te werken.
Elke eenheid bevat een of meer dialogen, die u kunt beluisteren op de audiocassette,
of een leestekst. Daarnaast bevat een eenheid ook een of meer overzichtskaders.
