about the editors
J. Christopher Muran, PhD, is Associate Dean and Professor at the Derner
Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies, and Director of the Psycho-
therapy Research Program at Beth Israel Medical Center. His research, which
has been supported in part by the National Institute of Mental Health and
presented at national and international forums, has concentrated on develop-
ing intervention and training models relating to the therapeutic alliance. His
many publications include such books as The Therapeutic Alliance in Brief
Psychotherapy, Negotiating the Therapeutic Alliance: A Relational Treat-
ment Guide, Self-Relations in the Psychotherapy Process, and Dialogues on
Difference: Studies of Diversity in the Therapeutic Relationship. Dr. Muran
is also a fellow of the American Psychological Association and coeditor of
the journal Psychotherapy Research.
Jacques P. Barber, PhD, ABPP, is Professor of Psychology in the Department
of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the
Philadelphia VA Medical Center. He conducts research on the outcome and
process of dynamic and cognitive therapies for depression, panic disorder,
posttraumatic stress disorder, substance dependence, and personality disor-
ders. Dr. Barber has also written extensively on the impact of the therapeutic
alliance and therapists’ use of theoretically relevant interventions on the
outcomes of various therapies. He is the coauthor (with Richard F. Sum-
mers) of Psychodynamic Therapy: A Guide to Evidence-Based Practice and
(with Hadas Wiseman) of Echoes of the Trauma: Relational Themes and
Emotions in Children of Holocaust Survivors. He is also a recent past presi-
dent of the Society for Psychotherapy Research.
