its literary co-text and the wider context of culture. Implications of
theanalysisforthenewperspectiveonLuke–Acts,especiallytheim-
pliedauthor’srelationshipwithJudaism,areexploredinrelationtothe
Lucanstories’originalcontextofreception.Largelyneglectedinter-
facesbetweenLuke’snarrativerepresentationofexorcismandemerg-
ingacademicdiscourseaboutreligiousexperience,shamanism,health
careinantiquity,ritualperformanceandancientJewishsystemsofim-
purityareprobedinwaysthatshedfreshlightonthissupremelyalien
partoftheLucanwritings.
