and Theoretical Issues» предназначено для студентов бакалавриата, направ-
ление 45.03.02 Лингвистика.

TEXT 1. A Healthy Lifestyle: Do you Really Know What It Is?
Part 1
A healthy lifestyle is a complex notion, not just dieting and doing physical
exercises. This way of human well-being implies the general balance of all life
aspects the most evident of which are avoiding smoking, drinking alcohol, being
on dope (taking drugs), being at a healthy weight, having proper eating habits and
regular meals; psychological aspects are of high significance too – positive optimistic
thinking, possessing skills of relaxation, having good relations with fellow-men.
The notion of a healthy lifestyle is naturally connected with the notion of
health. “The World Health Organization “in 1946 defined health as ‘A complete
state of mental, physical and social well-being not merely the absence of disease”
(19). So the healthy lifestyle means “steps, actions and strategies one puts in place
to achieve optimum health. Healthy Living is about taking responsibility for your
decisions and making smart health choices for today and for the future” (19).
Considering the notion of the healthy lifestyle we realize that it includes two
big fields: 1) “Physical Aspects (Deal with The Body) – Good Nutrition, Eating
Right, Getting Physically Fit, Beneficial Exercise, Adequate Rest; 2) Spiritual
Matters (Deal with The Mind and Soul) – Proper Stress Management, Ability to
Enjoy Giving and Receiving, Forgiveness, Love and Compassion, You Need to
Laugh and Experience Happiness, You Need Joyful Relationships With Yourself
and Others, Emotional Wellness, Self-Supportive Attitudes, Positive Thoughts,
Positive Self-Image, Spiritual Wellness, Inner Calmness” (19).
We should be very attentive to all these aspects of our “self” because ignoring just
one of them prevents us from enjoying a complete physical and spiritual harmony.

All people want to live a long life, but this long life mustn’t be spent in constant
sufferings caused by the poor condition of body and spirit. The healthy lifestyle
helps even elderly people to live an energetic life and avoid suffering from chronic
diseases (heart disorders, cancer, diabetes, joint diseases). Of course, clinical
care helps to cope with these pathological states, but many health disorders can be
avoided or at least postponed by following the principles of a healthy lifestyle.
Unfortunately, our busy life prevents us from arranging our daily schedule
according to the healthy principles. Taking care about our physical and spiritual
health is very often not the primary item in our daily list of ‘things to do’.
Yes, to introduce positive healthy principles in our daily routine is difficult, but
the persons who managed to do it share their productive experience saying that
healthy life transformations shouldn’t have a revolutionary character and be started
too abruptly, because the HLS adherents’ enthusiasm tends to decline at their
simultaneous facing hunger and muscle pain after radical dieting and too energetic
training in a gym. The effect might be better if the improvements were introduced
slowly and gradually, step-by-step – one healthy measure every one/two months.
Steps mustn’t be too large: for example, start putting not two but one spoonful of
sugar in your tea, take to the office home-made lunch and eat it slowly instead of
wasting time on running to the canteen and eating there “nobody-knows-what”.
Actually, it doesn’t take too much time to make a healthy sandwich of wholegrain
bread, a few slices of lean beef, tomatoes or cucumbers and lettuce leaves. Instead
of countless cups of instant coffee of questionable quality it is much healthier to
drink beverages of herbs and berries made in a thermos flask. Think over the
possible steps, choose those that won’t be too stressful for you. Make a plan: to
introduce six positive improvements a year. Do not forget to praise yourself for
every little victory. Be proud of yourself. Respect yourself. But let it be your
personal way to perfection, do not be in a hurry to share your little achievements
with anybody because false friends, who are too weak-willed to start their own
personal improvements, may start devaluating yours, killing your motivation.
You may check yourself and find out whether your life style is healthy and
harmonious or not. Answer for yourself the following questions:
1) Do you usually eat because you are really hungry?
2) Do you go to bed before the midnight?
3) Do you feel comfortable in the circle of your “nearest and dearest”?
4) Are you full of energy when you open your eyes in bed after waking up?

5) Do you often smile?
6) Do you feel loved and appreciated?
If most of the answers are “no” it’s high time to start introducing positive
changes in your life. It doesn’t make any difference whether you are old or
young, what your weight is and what your shape is like, it’s never too late to start
loving yourself and taking care about yourself.
Vocabulary development
1) Translate from Russian into English:
Вести сбалансированную жизнь, пропагандировать плюсы здорового
образа жизни, затрагивают (влияют на) здоровье, любовь, сочувствие и со-
страдание, справляться с источниками стресса, улучшить качество жизни,
привычки повседневной жизни, вносить положительные изменения, при-

– Who could be the author of this material?
– What is the stereotypical notion of a healthy lifestyle? Do you agree that
actually it is wider and deeper?
– Try to explain what is “balanced life”, why is it of crucial importance for
a healthy lifestyle?
– Let us consider the Physical Aspects of healthy living. Which of them is the
most difficult for you to attain?
– Do you agree that the author finds spiritual matters more important in attaining
well-being and health? Do you share this point of view? Discuss this matter in class.
– Why do people abandon the healthy lifestyle?
– What simple solution is suggested by the author to those who can’t change
their “unhealthy life” abruptly and radically? Is it a sensible suggestion?

The Components Of A Healthy Lifestyle
1) The right nutrition is an essential and for many people primary aspect of
a healthy lifestyle. Our body needs the proper amounts of vitamins and nutrients
for normal functioning. Without the proper nutrition we can feel sluggish, lose
hair, suffer from insomnia, cramps and other unpleasant symptoms.
2) Regular physical activity must become the necessary part of your daily
program. It will help you to keep weight in check, sleep deeper, heart attacks and
strokes won’t be your story. Such easy (and free!) physical activities as just long
walking in the nearest park, Nordic walking, swimming, simple sit-ups are sure
to make you tough and resilient and prolong your life.
3) Mastering Stress Management is vital because stress is the root of many
health disorders, it triggers destructive processes in the body, disrupts the hormonal
balance and is the reason of other long-term health risks. To repair the stressed
condition of mind people turn to such “remedies” as alcohol, cigarettes, sedative
pills (often becoming addictive), sweets, casual sex. Stress is often the reason of
conflicts in families and at work which also do not contribute to the harmonious
way of life. One must master relaxation techniques and minimize stress in his life.
4) Love yourself. A clever person said that a happy person is whose best
friend is himself. Be kind and affectionate to yourself, take care of yourself.
Forgive yourself and never criticize yourself too much. Just few people think
about it but good attitude to yourself is really a key to a healthy and happy life.
5) Gain the Life Balance – physical, spiritual, emotional, social, financial.
There should be a balance between work and family, your own family and your
family of orientation (parental family), work and leisure, your dreams and
desires and reality. This balance makes your conscience clear, your life will not
turn into a “guilt-trip” when you are dissatisfied with your life and environment
and think that a real perfect life will start later and now you are experiencing and
enjoying not your only real life but a kind of its “rough draft”. Thinking like that
is a trap that leads to complete disappointment, dissatisfaction and frustration.
Spreading yourself too thin leads to destructive stress. Of course, mental,
spiritual and physical health is out of the question under such conditions. Be
happy just here and now. Enjoy little things and don’t forget that thousands of
people live in much more terrible conditions than you. Remember: “all of the
key areas of our lives overlap and interlink, effecting each other. Unless we
create for ourselves satisfaction in each and every part of our life, we can never
truly be fulfilled, or live a contented, happy and healthy life” (19).
