Incontrastwiththefundamentalecologicalexpectationthatsimilarity
inducescompetitionandlossofspecies,temporaldynamicsallowsimilar
speciestoco-occur.Infact,thecoexistenceofsimilarspeciescontributes
significantlytospeciesdiversityandcouldaffectecosystemresponseto
climatechange.However,becausetemporalprocessestakeplaceover
time,theyhaveoftenbeenachallengetodocumentoreventoidentify.
TemporalDynamicsandEcologicalProcessbringstogetherstudies
thathavemetthischallengeandpresenttwospecificaspectsof
temporalprocesses:reproductiveschedulingandthestablecoexistence
ofsimilarspecies.Byusingplantstoextractgeneralprinciples,
thesestudiesuncoverdeeptiesbetweentemporalnichedynamics
andtheabovecentralecologicalissues,therebyprovidingabetter
understandingofwhatdrivestemporalprocessesinnature.
Writtenbyleadingscientistsinthefield,thistitlewillbea
valuablesourceofreferencetoresearchecologistsandtothose
interestedintemporalecology.

haspublishedwidelyonthesetopicsandhasbeenaprincipalinvestigator
orco-PIonvariousfundedprojectsintheUnitedStates,theUKandMéxico.
MICHAELG.BOWLERhasworkedintheDepartmentofPhysicsatthe
UniversityofOxfordforover40years.Hisresearchinterestfocusedon
particlephysics.Hehastakenpartinseveralmajorcollaborationsin
thisfield,mostrecentlytheSudburyNeutrinoObservatory.Hehas
authoredorco-authored150papersandhaswrittenfivebooks.
GORDONA.FOXisAssociateProfessorintheDepartmentofIntegrative
BiologyattheUniversityofSouthFlorida.Hismainareaofresearchis
plantecologyandtheoreticalpopulationbiology.Hisrecentworkhas
focusedondemographicheterogeneityanditscausesandconsequences,
includingboththeoreticalstudiesandresearchwithpopulationsof
pines,liliesandFloridascrub-jays.
