Résumé
Construite à partir d’un vocabulaire restreint et répétitif, la première épître
johannique ne présente ni une structure littéraire ni une argumentation évidentes pour
l’exégèse moderne. Cette thèse offre une proposition originale de structuration de 1
Jean et en dégage une ligne d’argumentation cohérente. Le travail est accompli à
l’aide de la méthode d’analyse littéraire dite «structurelle». La méthode consiste à
retracer la structure d’un texte de style sémitique d’après des récurrences de mots qui
le composent. Elle parvient ainsi à signaler des structures symétriques là où on ne
voyait auparavant que redondance et chaos. Parce que le travail est effectué à partir
de la disposition des mots dans le texte, il offre une prise à la vérification ou à
l’invalidation. Comme le lexique est porteur de sens, l’analyse ouvre en même temps
des perspectives d’interprétation intéressantes.
L’épître est constituée d’un préambule (1,1-4) et de huit sections (1,5 2,7; 2,8-17;

2,18-28; 2,29— 3,10; 3,11-23; 3,24— 4,13; 4,14— 5,10; 5,11-21), délimitées par voie
d’inclusion. Les quatre premières sections (1,5 3,10) forment un diptyque
—
chiastique. de formule AB//B’A’. Les quatre sections restantes (3,11 5,21) forment
—
aussi un diptyque chiastique, de formule CD//D’C’. Les deux diptyques se rattachent
au préambule grâce aux versets 1,5 et 3,11. La structure est fondée sur le parallélisme
des membres.
L’épître développe en deux temps un soutien aux commandements de l’amour des
frères et de la foi en Jésus, fils de Dieu. Dans le premier diptyque, l’auteur de l’épître
part du principe général qu’il faut une conformité des fidèles avec Dieu pour qu’il y
ait communion (dyade AllA’). Il en arrive à exposer la double nécessité d’aimer ses
frères et de confesser Jésus Oint (dyade B//B’). Dans le deuxième diptyque, l’auteur
poursuit son argument, à partir de la complémentarité des deux commandements
(dyade ClIC’), jusqu’à démontrer leur intime indissolubilité (dyade DI/D’).
L’argumentation présente ainsi une forme cyclique, faisant une première exposition
des thèses, pour ensuite les détailler et les approfondir. Cette argumentation cyclique
correspond à la structure littéraire des chiasmes trouvés.

Summary
Given its limited and repetitive vocabulary, the First Johaimine Epistie does flot
present neither a clear literary structure, nor a coherent argument to modem scholars.
This thesis analyzes 1 John and illustrates the une ofargument implied by its literary
structure. The method used is «analyse structurelle», which yields the literai-y
structure of a Semitic styled text, through minute observation of lexical recurrences.
It unveils literary pattems otherwise unnoticed by modem eyes. Texts that seemed
redundant and chaotic reveal symmetrical structures based on carefully organized
repetitions of clauses and words. Since results are overtly obtained from word order
in the text, they can be readily assessed, verified or challenged by any reader of the
Greek text. furthermore, such analysis can help trace back the logical argument
encrypted in what seemed tedious, poor literai-y style.
1 John appears to be composed of a preamble (1,1-4) and eight sections (1,5 2,7;

2,8-17; 2,18-2$; 2,29 3,10; 3,11-23; 3,24 4,13; 4,14 5,10; 5,11-21), each

rounded off by inclusion (the repetition of significant words or clauses at the
beginning and the end of a literary unit). The first four sections (1,5 3,10) form a
—
chiastic diptych, Iabelled AB//B’A’. The last four sections (3,11 5,21) also forrn a
—
chiastic diptycli, labelled CD//D’C’. Both diptychs are linked to the preamble through
verses 1,5 and 3,11. The structure accounts for numerous lexical parallelisms
between the sections thus paired.
The epistie develops an argument encouraging readers to keep the commandments to
love the brethren and to believe in Jesus Christ. The author ofthe epistie starts offin
the first diptych stating the necessity for the faithful to conform themselves to the
character of God in order to hold communion with Him (AllA’). Ne can then specify
that such compliance is revealed through mutual love and faith in Christ (B//B’). In
the second diptych, the author continues his argument, putting forward that both
commandments complete each other (ClIC’), and demonstrating lastly that love and
faith are in fact inseparable (DIID’). The argument proceeds spiral-wise from one
exposition to the other. espousing the cyclic nature ofthe literary structure.
