There’sagoodreasonthatSQLAnywherehasover70%ofthemobiledatabase
market.Infact,thereareseveralgoodreasons:It’seasytouse,easytoadminis-
ter,anditdoesn’ttakeupmuchspace.Thoseareallgoodthingsifyou’retrying
todeployhundredsorthousandsofdatabases.Andthey’regoodthingstohave
ifyou’retryingtoembedrelationaldatabasesinsidetensofthousandsofrouters
orswitchesorotherhardwaredevices.
ButSQLAnywhereisn’tjustformobileandembeddeddatabases;it’sgot
thefeaturesandtheflexibilitytoworkasanetworkserverwithhundredsof
activeuserspoundingawayonasingledatabase.Andit’sgotasolidfoundation
andalonghistory,fromitsrootswithWatcominthe1980sthroughto
PowersoftandSybaseinthe1990sandnowwithiAnywhereSolutionsinthe
newmillennium.
Throughallthoseyears,theSQLAnywheredevelopmentteamhasnever
strayedfromonecentralvirtue;asRichardWilliamsofVMICommunication
andLearningSystemssaidit,“Watcomdoesthingsthewaytheyshouldbe
