Bureau of IndIan StandardS
Lighting alone accounts for nearly 20% of the total electricity consumption in India.
Effective design of lighting system can result in substantial saving of energy in the
country. Intelligent lighting and LED applications in lighting systems can ensure right
lighting at right time and at right location with optimum level of energy consumption,
which can contribute to ‘Smart India Mission’ and development of ‘Smart Cities’ in India.
With the advent of LEDs, direct use of DC power through renewable energy resources
like solar power has also gained philip and there is global attempt of clean energy
generation using renewable energy resources and off-grid distribution including use of
LEDs in remote rural homes for which an Indian Standard on Solar Lantern has already
been published by BIS.
It is true that the country that uses less energy to achieve the same or better results
not only cuts its costs but also reduce pollution and promotion of use of LEDs through
such exhibitions certainly contribute signifcantly in meeting the national prime objective
of better environment and energy conservation. Integrating LED lamps with solar
photovoltaic systems, can help India in achieving the target of sustainable development
and also reduce burden on our fossil fuels.
Bureau of Indian Standards has so far published 117 Indian standards on lighting
including National Lighting Code and 12 Indian Standards on LEDs and is in the process
to publish more. Bureau of Indian Standards is also in process of introducing multiple
grading in Indian Standards based on the parameters like energy effciency to further
strengthen the quality of lighting products with availability of improved consumer choice.
Adopting Indian Standards for Lighting Systems and Components will ensure safety and
long term performance simultaneously ensuring high degree of energy effciency.
I am glad to note that ELCOMA along with Messe Frankfurt is organizing Light India
Exhibition (Featuring Green Lighting Technology) during 18th to 21st September 2014
at Pragati Maidan with emphasis on green and energy effcient lighting technology.

the world of lighting, luminaires and its accessories.
I wish the exhibition all success.
