NWAHA Celebrates Most Successful Show Season in Years!(cid:0)
up arena a bit in August,(cid:0)
everyone involved really(cid:0)
seemed to enjoy themselves.(cid:0)
Both shows had about 40(cid:0)
horse/handler entrants, with the(cid:0)
August crowd slightly larger(cid:0)
than the group who came out in(cid:0)
June. Both events provided(cid:0)
opportunities for Andalusian(cid:0)
enthusiasts to showcase their(cid:0)
horses in a great variety of(cid:0)
events.(cid:0)
In June, along with the(cid:0)
IALHA-sanctioned classes in(cid:0)
halter, English, Western, and Doma(cid:0) stallions to delight the audience with(cid:0)
Vaquera, we also hosted a Dancing(cid:0) Spanish Walk, passage, and additional(cid:0)
Stallion Competition, which brought(cid:0) dance moves.(cid:0)
several new members to the club as well(cid:0) Linda deWilde-Peterson and Toni(cid:0)
as giving existing members the chance to(cid:0)Mueller rode their Andalusians in a(cid:0)
see firsthand traditional Charro riding(cid:0) musical(cid:0)pas de deux(cid:0), Joanna Wayland(cid:0)
and tack. In August, our Saturday(cid:0) and Cyndy Stephens Winchell performed(cid:0)
Thanks to all our enthusiastic(cid:0) evening exhibition featured NWAHA(cid:0) a musical freestyle reining exhibition,(cid:0)
participants, generous sponsors, and(cid:0) members performing a variety of(cid:0) and Ami MacHugh’s colts rough-housed(cid:0)
countless volunteer hours, the club’s two(cid:0)specialty acts that they had put together(cid:0) in the arena, much to the crowd’s(cid:0)
shows this year were wonderfully(cid:0) in advance.(cid:0) delight.(cid:0)
successful. Both shows this year were(cid:0) Vanessa Hamm drove all the way up(cid:0) Full results from both shows can be(cid:0)
larger than club events since 2004, and(cid:0) from Oregon to present the flag in the(cid:0) downloaded from www.nwaha.org!(cid:0)

Ailsa Heritage Enterprises(cid:0) Lily and I have had an activity filled(cid:0) and is coming along well in her(cid:0)
Lewiston, Idaho(cid:0) summer with the horses with(cid:0) training so it should be a lovely match.(cid:0)
Here in Idaho the fall seems to be(cid:0) organizing and riding in a clinic with(cid:0) We have one last clinic in(cid:0)
coming sooner(cid:0) Bettina Drummond in Ashland, OR. in(cid:0) LaGrande, OR. for Sept. 14-16 with a(cid:0)
as the(cid:0) July.(cid:0) Portuguese instructor, Jorge Pereira. I(cid:0)
temperatures(cid:0) Bettina started the training sessions(cid:0)have not worked with this instructor(cid:0)
have dropped(cid:0) with a 2 ½ day stint in the Bellingham,(cid:0)before so I look forward to seeing his(cid:0)
from the(cid:0) WA, area then flew down to Ashland(cid:0) style and ability. Ballerina and I have(cid:0)
heatwave of(cid:0) for just over a week. We had some half(cid:0)time for a little more training before(cid:0)
summer which(cid:0) days and full days of lessons filled(cid:0) she can rest on her laurels for the(cid:0)
makes it so(cid:0) with riders from the Ashland area,(cid:0) winter and make her baby. Then we'll(cid:0)

to my trainers for the next 2 months to(cid:0) ride with her again! Everyone made(cid:0)
continue line driving and be broke to a(cid:0) lots of progress. She has a phenomenal(cid:0)
rider. "Espirito" is growing like a(cid:0) eye and pushes you to get what you're(cid:0)
weed. Any one of my 3 horses are for(cid:0) working on until it's correct. It's tough(cid:0)
sale, see ad in this newsletter.(cid:0) but boy does it feel good when you get(cid:0)
"Espirito" needs a home that would(cid:0)it!!!.(cid:0)
like to keep him as an Azteca Stallion(cid:0) She also rode a PSP mare, Sueli,(cid:0)
as I cannot keep a stallion. I just hate(cid:0) most days. This is a mare that Bettina(cid:0)
to geld such a fine colt but will do so if(cid:0)found, started and trained for the(cid:0)

The age old decision of when to(cid:0) -Nancy Robinson(cid:0) and I roped 6 of them into staying to(cid:0)
start the young mare, who to send her(cid:0) volunteer at the June show. Seems like(cid:0)
too when(cid:0) I purchased Novalina De Luz(cid:0) we had barely(cid:0)
we realized(cid:0) ("Nova") from Cathy Sause in(cid:0) gotten back(cid:0)
she just(cid:0) November 2006 and began riding her(cid:0) from that(cid:0)
adores the(cid:0) in January 2007. She is my first(cid:0) show when it(cid:0)
attention she(cid:0) Andalusian, though I have been(cid:0) was time to(cid:0)

the fact she just crosses the bridge in(cid:0) more of a whirlwind than normal,(cid:0) In between shows and horse pack(cid:0)
the arena like a seasoned pro.(cid:0) reminding me for the umpteenth time(cid:0) trips, I’ve been pretty busy attending(cid:0)
The picture is awful :) but they(cid:0) how fortunate I am that Cyndy (with(cid:0) IALHA board meetings and fulfilling(cid:0)
look happy. I am very proud of the(cid:0) whom I co-own the farm where I run(cid:0) the myriad tasks that being on the(cid:0)
both of them. Centara will start her(cid:0) my breeding business, she runs her(cid:0) Board brings my way. If you’re(cid:0)
formal training (the harder stuff) this(cid:0) training business, and we both(cid:0) passing through Eugene, please plan on(cid:0)
next month and we hope to have her on(cid:0)cooperate to run a boarding business)(cid:0) stopping by for a visit!(cid:0)

Andalusians. Of course, the horses we(cid:0) initials Ph.D. after my(cid:0)
have are still dear to us and have great(cid:0) name... although the(cid:0)
dispositions, but they are not the(cid:0) ‘doctor’ still seems(cid:0)

Interview with Equine Artist: Dee Dee Murry(cid:0)
Where did you grow up and what(cid:0) but I would cry even when a farmer’s(cid:0)
influenced your art?(cid:0) chicken died, so I decided working with(cid:0)
I grew up in the Pacific NW and had(cid:0) sick animals wasn’t the best choice for(cid:0)
two Morabs that I showed at local shows.(cid:0)me.(cid:0)
I rode every second I could. A friend of(cid:0) I worked in the credit department of(cid:0)
mine and I decided to do a marathon ride(cid:0)a hospital for a few years. Then my two(cid:0)
and we got into the Guinness Book of(cid:0) brothers and I went into business(cid:0)
World Records for riding a horse the(cid:0) together creating computer games. We(cid:0)
longest (70 hours straight).(cid:0) transitioned from that into web design(cid:0)
Unfortunately I don’t have my own(cid:0) and various other online projects,(cid:0)
horses right now, but I try to be around(cid:0) music, etc. I also do a lot of event and(cid:0)
them every chance I get. I also love dogs(cid:0) portrait photography.(cid:0)
and have a wonderful Longhaired(cid:0) I got into photography after the(cid:0) a beautiful stallion for instance, takes on(cid:0)
Dachshund, Hallie. She is an awesome(cid:0) Friesian meeting in Puyallup a couple of(cid:0) that certain pose, with the wind in his(cid:0)
little dog and has titles in obedience and(cid:0) years ago. I was like a kid in a candy(cid:0) mane, beautiful background with lovely(cid:0)
Schutzhund. So it was natural that my art(cid:0)store with all of those beautiful horses in(cid:0) lighting, or capturing an exceptional(cid:0)
subjects are horses, dogs, pets and(cid:0) one place, but my photos from inside the(cid:0) frame of a gallop, maybe right when the(cid:0)
wildlife. I have won some awards with(cid:0) dark arena were too dark and blurry to(cid:0) head is tucked and mane flaring out.(cid:0)
my wildlife art, such as Washington(cid:0) paint from. So I invested in some good(cid:0) I always paint from my own photos(cid:0)
State Ducks Unlimited artist of the year,(cid:0) gear and learned how to use it, and now I(cid:0)and that “special” photo will pop out.(cid:0)
and placing in the top 20 Federal(cid:0) Although I have yet to, and probably(cid:0)
Duck Stamp competition the last(cid:0) never will, paint directly from just(cid:0)

Horses are my favorite subject to(cid:0) maybe leg position, add mane and(cid:0)
paint though, my favorite breeds(cid:0) tail, different backgrounds always,(cid:0)
being the Baroque breeds.(cid:0) etc. I want the viewer to feel like this(cid:0)
How did you start out as an artist(cid:0) scene really could have happened in(cid:0)
and where did you get your(cid:0) real life and wish they could be(cid:0)
training?(cid:0) standing there watching it.(cid:0)
I have drawn since I could hold a(cid:0) What's the best and worst parts of(cid:0)
pencil (or crayon stick). I painted(cid:0) being a full time, working artist?(cid:0)
constantly growing up (and still do),(cid:0) The best is being able to do what I(cid:0)
and entered many shows. It’s so(cid:0) love for a living and also to be able to(cid:0)
much easier now that we have the(cid:0) work from home and be with my dog(cid:0)
internet, I now rarely set a booth up at a(cid:0) do the event and farm photography to(cid:0) all day. When you work for yourself, you(cid:0)
show, which is a lot of work! Like many(cid:0) help pay for the camera gear to get better(cid:0)end up working longer hours than most(cid:0)
artists, I am self taught. Practice is the(cid:0) photos to paint from…it’s all one big fun(cid:0)people and often for less pay, no(cid:0)
best teacher. I would have liked to have(cid:0) circle.(cid:0) benefits, no vacation, no retirement to(cid:0)
gone to art school, but I thought I wanted(cid:0)What medium do you work in?(cid:0) look forward to. But they are your hours(cid:0)
to be a vet. I actually started vet school(cid:0) Mainly acrylic and some graphite,(cid:0) and you don’t have anyone to answer to,(cid:0)
but I have been experimenting(cid:0) it’s great.(cid:0)
with mixed media. I have also(cid:0) The thing I really don’t like is the(cid:0)
been playing around with some(cid:0) business side. If I were suddenly a(cid:0)
watercolor, and I do use an(cid:0) millionaire and didn’t have to worry(cid:0)
airbrush to create haze or smooth(cid:0) about money, I would love to do free(cid:0)
out skies, etc.(cid:0) portraits of beloved horses and pets that(cid:0)
What inspires you most?(cid:0) people have lost. But the reality is I have(cid:0)
What I get most excited to paint(cid:0) to charge a certain amount to be able to(cid:0)
are, as I mentioned, the Baroque(cid:0) keep doing this, and that is the hard part(cid:0)
breeds, I love images that are(cid:0) for me.(cid:0)
dramatic and moody without(cid:0)

NWAHA on parade!(cid:0)
2007 Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade(cid:0) Eugene, Oregon, on our float and riding/dancing their(cid:0)
This year the Portland Rose Festival Parade celebrated(cid:0) horses to the beat of the live Mariachi music.(cid:0)
its 100(cid:0)th(cid:0) year anniversary. Although it was not the sunny(cid:0) The crowd of 25,000 to 30,000 spectators marveled at(cid:0)
day everyone involved hoped for, it was a bright day for(cid:0) the sight of the horses dancing the Piaffe, performing(cid:0)
Andalusian aficionados Pedro Munoz Sanchez, Cyndy(cid:0) Spanish Walk, bowing to the audience and performing(cid:0)
Stephens-Winchell, Jose Preciado and Jose Guiterez who(cid:0) Passage as space would allow. The crowd roared, whistled,(cid:0)
went together to participate in the Portland Rose Festival(cid:0) clapped and yelled with approval. It was a great day indeed(cid:0)
Parade under the name of Rancho Tres Potrillos & Friends(cid:0) to be so rich in family and friends to celebrate of Nation’s(cid:0)
in the Native or National(cid:0) independence day.(cid:0)
Costume class.(cid:0) Upon returning to the(cid:0)
This was Pedro’s 5t(cid:0)h(cid:0) year(cid:0) ranch after the parade, we(cid:0)
riding in the parade and the(cid:0) prepared for our Mexican(cid:0)
first time winning 1(cid:0)st(cid:0) place. It(cid:0) barbeque with slow cooked(cid:0)
wasn’t the easiest time as the(cid:0) beef hand-raised by our(cid:0)
weather was rainy and a bit(cid:0) NWAHA friend Miguel(cid:0)
windy...and waiting in line(cid:0) Santana and cooked until it(cid:0)
for the parade to start in(cid:0) fell of the bone in a rich red(cid:0)
weather like that for 1 ½(cid:0) sauce called birria. Jaime(cid:0)
hours had more than one(cid:0) Soltero provided beans, rice(cid:0)
participant questioning the(cid:0) & homemade salsa from his(cid:0)
wisdom of their choice of(cid:0) restaurants. Our most special(cid:0)
weekend fun!(cid:0) guests were the members of(cid:0)
Of course, once they(cid:0) the Mexican Consulate from(cid:0)
were out on the parade route(cid:0) the downtown Portland(cid:0)
itself, Pedro, Cyndy, Jose,(cid:0) offices.(cid:0)
and Jose found themselves(cid:0) The Mariachi band that(cid:0)
swept up in the smiles, admiration and applause from the(cid:0) accompanied the Rancho Tres Potrillos float in the parade(cid:0)
crowd as they pranced through downtown Portland on the(cid:0) came back to the ranch, where they set up and played music(cid:0)
nearly 5 mile route. The crowd’s appreciation for our group(cid:0)while the folkloric dancers danced and the 300+ guest ate to(cid:0)
more than made up for our cold achy stiff bodies. After the(cid:0) their hearts’ content.(cid:0)
parade, Pedro received the group’s nearly 4 foot tall trophy(cid:0) After lunch, guests started asking about Pedro’s new(cid:0)
from Stacey Flintjer, the PRFA Grant Floral Parade(cid:0) Andalusian stallion, Hilandero X. I asked Cyndy if she(cid:0)
Equestrian Division Chairman, in recognition of their first(cid:0) would ride Hilandero so our guests could see him, and this(cid:0)
place win. .(cid:0) ended up being one of the highlights of the event. While(cid:0)
Cyndy was tacking him up for the viewing, many Hispanic(cid:0)

Potrillos has ridden in this parade for nearly 20 years. Each(cid:0)Mariachi played and Pedro, with microphone in hand, sang(cid:0)
year, the event seems to get bigger and better.(cid:0) a Mexican ballad about a white stallion in honor of(cid:0)
This was definitely the best year yet for Rancho Tres(cid:0) Hilandero. On a patch of lawn only about 15 x 25 feet,(cid:0)
Potrillos, as they were joined by Jaime Soltero, owner of(cid:0) entirely ringed by a spellbound audience, Cyndy and(cid:0)
the four locally owned La Costita Mexican Restaurants(cid:0) Hilandero performed intricate maneuvers to the beat of the(cid:0)
riding his Friesian stallion Cinco; the Jose Preciado family(cid:0) music. Cyndy looked like she was guiding Hilandero(cid:0)
including Jose, Carlos and Fabiola and NWAHA member(cid:0) through a music routine practiced and fine tuned. After the(cid:0)
Miguel Santana riding their horses; the Folkloric Mexican(cid:0) song, several horse connoisseurs rushed over to give their(cid:0)
Dance Group dancing throughout the parade; the Mariachi(cid:0) approval and congratulations on such a fine horse.(cid:0)
Band playing along plus the family and friends of RTP,(cid:0) It was a great party and celebration although a trifle hot(cid:0)
including Julie Alonzo and Cyndy Stephens-Winchell from(cid:0) at 91 degrees, a good time was had by all.(cid:0)
