Однотиные «Шарнхорст» и «Гнейзенау» часто называли линейными крейсерами и этому были основания. По скорости эти линкоры превосходили все европейские корабли этого класса , за исключением трех английских линейных крейсеров. Вооружение же их было самым легким в классе - 9-280мм орудий. Однако по броневой защите «Гнейзенау» был настоящим линкором.В годы войны линкор действовал в паре с своим систершипом во всех операциях вплоть до прорыва через Ла Манш. После этого поврежденный на мине корабль был поставлен в док , но для ускорения работ боезапас главного калибра выгружать не стали. Через несколько дней во время английского авианалета бронебойная бомба попала в погреб боезапаса и корабль был сильно разрушен взрывом. Интересно , что после этого рассматривался проект восстановления линкора с заменой 9-280мм орудий на 6-380мм в башнях как на «Тирпице» и даже вариант с заменой всех 150мм и 105мм орудий на единый универсальный калибр из 22-128мм. Но линкор так и не был восстановлен.
