The NATO Science Series continues the series of books published formerly as the NATO ASI Series.
The NATO Science Programme offers support for collaboration in civil science between scientists of
countries of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council.The types of scientific meeting generally supported
are “Advanced Study Institutes” and “Advanced Research Workshops”, although other types of
meeting are supported from time to time.The NATO Science Series collects together the results of
these meetings.The meetings are co-organized bij scientists from NATO countries and scientists from
NATO’s Partner countries – countries of the CIS and Central and Eastern Europe.
Advanced Study Institutes are high-level tutorial courses offering in-depth study of latest advances
in a field.
Advanced Research Workshops are expert meetings aimed at critical assessment of a field, and
identification of directions for future action.
As a consequence of the restructuring of the NATO Science Programme in 1999, the NATO Science
Series has been re-organised and there are currently Five Sub-series as noted above.Please consult

Preface
The NATO Advanced Study Institute Series ’The Role of VLBI in As-
trophysics, Astrometry and Geodesy’ appears 13 years after the pioneering
summer school on ’VLBI Techniques and Applications’ edited by M. Felli
and R.E. Spencer. Its purpose is to update and expand our knowledge on
the scientific potential of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and
its development. In particular, the VLBI technique is reviewed in the light
of the most advanced astronomical observations. The scientific issues in
the field of galactic and extragalactic astronomy, astrometry and geodesy,
where this technique is recognised to play a crucial role, are emphasized.
The book includes such important aspects as a high-resolution approach to
non-thermal emission from extragalactic radio sources and the principles of
synchrotronemissioninanastrophysicalcontext.Thebasicconceptsofthe
theory of relativistic jets are presented. The evolution of young, powerful
radio sources is explained, while the structure of radio sources is treated in
the context of the unified scheme models. Important topics are discussed,
such as scintillation of extragalactic radio sources, radio polarimetry, in-
vestigation of the faint sub-mJy and micro-Jy radio sky, evolution of radio
emission from Supernovae, and astrophysical masers. In addition the read-
ers will find more technical issues such as radio and optical interferometry
and tropospheric and ionospheric phase calibration. Applications and re-
sults of VLBI for Geodesy and Geodynamics are also extensively discussed.
This book is intended to be a support for teachers and students in Astro-
physics and Geodesy at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and an aid
for scientists planning their own investigations.
