Abstract
Within the framework of this thesis an experimental setup for
measuring surface potentials that are due to accumulated surface
charges on gas insulated HVDC model insulators is designed, built
and operated.
As measurement sensor a vibrating Kelvin probe is used that enables
non-contact surface potential measurements. The insulator is moved
by a 3-axes handling system inside the gas insulated vessel which
enables automated measurements of the potential on the entire
surface. Because the time constant of the surface charge
accumulation in DC case is in the order of days to weeks, experiments
can be conducted automatically providing long term measurements of
the charge evolution on HVDC gas insulated test samples.
Previous studies dealing with the problem of surface charge
accumulation due to DC stress, tried to identify the main responsible
charging mechanism: surface conduction, bulk conduction or charge
transport through the gas phase. Typically this was done using one
principle test arrangement. Even though the used setups were quite
similar, different authors concluded differently, which charging
mechanism dominates.
In a first step, a simulation model incorporating the state of the art
(bulk currents, ion currents, temperature dependence of conductivity)
of surface charging via insulator bulk and gas phase is implemented
and applied to real size GIS insulators under no-load and load
conditions. It is shown that the responsible charging mechanism in a
single experimental setup depends on many parameters like for
example the active gas volume size, electric field strength, the exact
electric conductivity distribution in the solid insulation, present charge
sources in the gas phase etc. Out of these findings, different electrode
and sample configurations are designed to investigate the different
contributing parts individually and to quantify their specific contribution
to the surface charging.

The main focus in this work is the charging from the gas phase.
Charging due to bulk currents was investigated as well. A special
focus was put into the transition between the main responsible
charging paths i.e. the transition of ion currents and currents in the
insulator bulk as main responsible source bringing charges to the
insulator surface. The effect of surface conduction is not addressed in
this thesis.
In this thesis the three charge sources in the gas phase, which are
natural ionization, (micro) discharges and field emission and their
individual contribution to the total surface charging are investigated.
Also their temporal evolution is studied.
The ohmic and saturated conduction regime in the gas phase is
demonstrated experimentally with only natural ionization present as
charge source. The direct correlation between active gas volume size
and surface charge accumulation is shown under the same
conditions.
If additional charge sources like partial discharges or micro discharges
are present, a large amount of additional ions is released into the gas
phase. These micro discharge currents, which cannot be detected by
classical PD measurements, are due to imperfections or rough
electrodes and studied in detail as well. Maximal field strengths to
avoid micro discharges when constructing gas insulated HVDC
equipment are given.
As the current arising from the bulk does not saturate with increasing
field strength, a transition exists where the bulk current takes over the
charging in a setup. This transition is shown by experiments.
In case of dominant bulk currents the electric conductivity of the
insulation material determines the surface charging. As the electric
conductivity is strongly temperature dependent the influence of
temperature gradients within the insulator is also investigated.
All experimental work is accompanied by simulations for comparison
and confirmation.

Zusammenfassung
Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit ist ein experimentaler Aufbau zur Messung
von Oberflächenladungen aufgebaut worden. Die Oberflächen-
ladung wurde nicht direkt in Coulomb gemessen, sondern die Wirkung
der Ladungen in Form ihres erzeugten Oberflächenpotentials in Volt.
Ziel war es die Entwicklung von Oberflächenladungen auf Gas
isolierten HVDC Isolatoren zu untersuchen.
Die wichtigsten Hauptkomponenten des experimentellen Aufbaus
sind ein vibrierender Kelvin Sensor, mit dem kontaktlose
Oberflächenpotentialmessungen möglich sind, sowie ein drei-
achsiges Handling System für Elektroden, Probe und Sensor im
Inneren des gasdichten Versuchsgefässes. Da die Aufladungszeiten
im Fall von DC Problemen in der Größenordnung von Tagen bis zu
mehreren Wochen liegen, wurde eine automatisierte Versuchs-
ablaufsteuerung implementiert. So konnten Langzeitmessungen
leicht durchgeführt und die zeitliche Entwicklung der
Oberflächenladung gemessen werden.
Vergangene Arbeiten zum Thema der Oberflächenaufladung auf Gas
isolierten DC Isolatoren versuchten immer nur den im gerade
untersuchten Aufbau hauptverantwortlichen Ladungstransportweg zu
finden. Die drei möglichen Transportwege sind, Leitung durch den
Isolator, Leitung an der Isolatoroberfläche und Ladungstransport
durch den Gasraum. Als Konsequenz kamen viele Arbeiten mit
ähnlichen experimentellen Aufbauten zu unterschiedlichen
Schlüssen, welcher Ladungstransportweg der wichtigste sei.
Im ersten Schritt wurde ein Simulationsmodell welches den aktuellen
Stand des Wissens von Oberflächenaufladung durch die Gasphase
und den Isolatorkörper beinhaltet entworfen. Das Simulationsmodell
wurde auf reale GIS Isolatoren für den belasteten und unbelasteten
Fall angewendet. So wurde theoretisch gezeigt, dass der
hauptverantwortliche Ladungstransportweg in ein und demselben
Aufbau von vielen Parametern abhängt. Einige dieser Parameter sind
zum Beispiel die Grösse des aktiven Gasvolumens, die elektrische

Feldstärke am Isolator, die genaue elektrische Leitfähigkeitsverteilung
im Isolator, verschiedene vertretene Ladungsquellen im Gasraum,
etc. Mit Hilfe dieser Ergebnisse konnten verschiedene Elektroden-
und Probengeometrien entwickelt werden, um die einzelnen zur
Aufladung beisteuernden Effekte im Detail, isoliert voneinander, zu
untersuchen.
Das Hauptaugenmerk dieser Arbeit lag auf dem Einfluss und Beitrag
der Gasphase. Auch der Übergang von der Gasphase zur Leitung
durch den Isolator als hauptverantwortlicher Ladungstransportweg
wurde untersucht. Der Einfluss des Ladungstransportes auf Grund
von Oberflächenleitung auf die Aufladung war nicht Teil dieser Arbeit.
In der Gasphase gibt es drei mögliche Quellen für Ladungen:
natürliche Ionisation, (Mikro) Entladungen und Feldemission. In der
vorliegenden Arbeit wurde jede einzelne mögliche Quelle untersucht
und ihr Beitrag zur zeitlich abhängigen Gesamtladungsentwicklung
festgestellt.
Der ohmsche und gesättigte Spannung – Ionenstrom
Zusammenhang im Gas bei einzig gegenwärtiger natürlichen
Ionisation als Ladungsquelle im Gasraum wurde experimentell
gezeigt. Weiter wurde der direkte Zusammenhang von der Grösse
des aktiven Gasvolumens mit der Amplitude der akkumulierten
Oberflächenladung bewiesen.
Sind andere Ladungsquellen wie Teilentladungen oder
Mikroentladungen in der Gasphase gegenwärtig wird eine große
zusätzliche Anzahl an Ladungsträgern emittiert. Diese
Mikroentladungen können an scharfen Fehlstellen oder rauen
Elektroden auftreten und ihr Einfluss auf die Oberflächenaufladung
wurde im Detail untersucht. Es wurden im weiteren Designfeldstärken
zur Vermeidung dieser ungewollten Entladungen auf Grund der
Rauigkeit angegeben.
Elektrische Ströme im Isolator sättigen nicht mit zunehmender
Spannung wie es bei Ionenströmen im Gasraum der Fall sein kann.
Deshalb kann die Aufladung in einem Setup welche bei niedrigeren
Spannungen von Ionenströmen im Gas dominiert wird bei höheren
Spannungen von Strömen im Isolator dominiert werden. Dieser

Übergang des hauptverantwortlichen Ladungstransportweges wurde
in der vorliegenden Arbeit ebenfalls untersucht und gezeigt.
Dominieren Ströme im Isolator die Aufladung ist dessen elektrische
Leitfähigkeit der massgebende Parameter. Da die elektrische
Leitfähigkeit stark temperaturabhängig ist, wurde dieser Effekt an
Proben mit einem Temperaturgradient ebenfalls untersucht.
Alle Experimente wurden mit entwickelten geeigneten
Simulationsmodellen verglichen und somit bestätigt.
