• Purpose is to
– promote care for and improvement of the natural heritage
– help people enjoy it responsibly
– enable greater understanding and awareness of it
– promote its sustainable use, now and for future generations

The Habitats Directive

Article 3:
‘A coherent ecological network of special areas of
conservation shall be set up under the title Natura 2000. This network
… shall enable the natural
habitat types and species’ habitats concerned to be maintained or, where appropriate,
restored at a favourable conservation status in their
natural range.’
