Sustainable Infrastructure impacts our well-being and day-to-day lives. The
infrastructures we are building today will shape our lives tomorrow. The complex
and diverse nature of the impacts due to weather extremes on transportation and
civil infrastructures can be seen in our roadways, bridges, and buildings. Extreme
summer temperatures, droughts, flash floods, and rising numbers of freeze-thaw
cycles pose challenges for civil infrastructure and can endanger public safety. We
constantly hear how civil infrastructures need constant attention, preservation, and
upgrading. Such improvements and developments would obviously benefit from
ourdesired bookseries thatprovidesustainable engineering materials anddesigns.
The economic impact is huge and much research has been conducted worldwide.
The future holds many opportunities, not only for researchers in a given country,
but also for the worldwide field engineers who apply and implement these
technologies. We believe that no approach can succeed if it does not unite the
efforts of various engineering disciplines from all over the world under one
umbrellatoofferabeaconofmodernsolutionstotheglobalinfrastructure.Experts
from the various engineering disciplines around the globe will participate in this
series, including: Geotechnical, Geological, Geoscience, Petroleum, Structural,

About the Editors
HeshamAmeen Geo-InstituteofHBRCisconsidered
one of the largest geotechnical institutes in the Middle
East that has an ISO certificate. Professor Hisham had
been selected to chair the institute from many years
ago. This selection had been done based on his
activities, accuracy, awareness, and hard work in the
research. He is specialized in geotechnical testing,
neural networks for the geotechnical engineering, and
soil Improvement.

Mario Manassero obtained his Civil Engineering
degreein1980atPolitecnicodiTorinoandreceivedhis
Ph.D. at the same university in 1987. He has been
visiting professor at the University of Ancona (Italy)
from 1988 to 1993, Ghent University (Belgium) in
1996,andatColoradoStateUniversity(USA)in1995.
Since 1998, he has been Professor of Geotechnical
Engineering at Politecnico di Torino.
He has been Chairman of the Technical Committee
(TC) no. 215 “Environmental Geotechnics” of the
International Society for Soil Mechanics and
Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) for the period
2001 to 2014 and a member of the expert consulting
boardoftheItalianMinistryoftheEnvironmentforthe
Environmental Impact Assessment of major national
projects from 2008 to 2012.
His main research activities are devoted to the
characterization of soil deposits by in-situ tests, soil
improvement and reinforcement methods, containment
systems for landfills and polluted subsoils, vacuum
extraction of subsoil pollutants, and the mechanical
behavior of municipal and industrial solid wastes. He
has also addressed more fundamental topics like the
chemo-physicalinteractionbetweenporefluidsandthe
solid skeleton of active clays, the multiphase coupled
flows, and the associated subsoil pollutant transport
phenomena.
He has been invited lecturer in a number of
international conferences and academic celebrations.

Lecture on Environmental Geotechnics, at the
Millennium Conference “GEOENG2000” jointly orga-
nized by ISSMGE, ISRM e IAGEA, Melbourne,
Australia (November 2000).

Lecturer by ISSMGE TC 215 and the Lecture was
delivered at the 19th International Conference on Soil
Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE),
Seoul (Corea), 2017.
He was involved in many committees for the
preparation of guidelines and regulations, at the
national and international level, concerning civil engi-
neering and environmental aspects and he was a
