Dramma in due atti a sfondo storico, Quel giorno a Bugerru (1970) rievoca lo sciopero dei minatori sardi tragicamente represso con le armi nel settembre del 1904. Il malcontento dei lavoratori - costretti a condizioni di vita disumane - è sorto sul regime di assoluta libertà nel quale operano le società minerarie straniere. Nel ritmo serrato dei dialoghi dei personaggi Ruju restituisce tutta la fragilità del rapporto fra i minatori e una classe padronale che vuole dominare sempre, su tutto e fino in fondo. Ma l’arma del ricatto sociale e psicologico, che consente ai “carnefici” di tener saldo il loro equilibrio, ha pure in sé i germi della ribellione. Il senso di profondo disagio che invade i minatori culmina nella rivolta ma il compimento è il definitivo drammatico atto dell’eccidio: che sopprime la ribellione. Il tragico epilogo dei fatti di Buggerru, reso da Ruju con grande suggestione lirica, resta una delle pagine più oscure della storia civile italiana.<br/>Romano Ruju (Nuoro 1935-1974) È stata una singolarissima figura d'intellettuale e scrittore dei primi anni Settanta. Poeta, romanziere e drammaturgo, per lunghi anni ha collaborato con quotidiani e riviste letterarie, con scritti e articoli improntati ad impegno politico e letterario.
