It is a pleasure to introduce Psycho-Cybernetics 2000. The Maltz
Foundation is responsible for overseeing the legacy of Dr. Max-
well Mallz, and we are confident that this book will contribute to
that legacy. Although Dr. Maltz was nota psychologist or psycho-
therapist by training, he cared deeply about his patients’ recovery
in his practice as a plastic surgeon. Ata time when mental-health
professionals were wed lo the Freudian model which down-
graded people's control over their lives, Dr. Maltz put together
somne of the best formulations ever on how people can improve
themselves. Today professionals have moved in the direction Dr
Maltz advocated: self-image, self-realization, biofeedback, posi-
tive self-talk, and imaginative exercises are central to how we
think about psychological improvement, whether self- or thera-
pist-directed. As a professional research psychologist, Ican assure
you that the ideas and techniques you will be reading about are
consistent with current professional theory and practice.
Updating Dr. Maliz’s message is Dr. Bobbe Sommer. She has
dealt with issties of self-improvement in depth with her psycho-
therapy clients and more generically with her thousands of work-
shop participants. She knows what people's concems ate, and

This project has other essential participants. Mark Falstein is
a gifted writer, and his efforts to make this book as readable as it
is can be found on every page. We had to pull him away from
working on his novel, but our gain should result in only a tempo-
rary delay to literature. It was our good fortune to work under the
editorial direction of Ellen Schneid Coleman, Senior Editor at
Simon é& Schuster, Thanks to her guidance, this project was
launched and has stayed on target with clear language and a
presentation to sustain readers’ interest.
Finally, I would like to pay tribute to Anna Harabin Maltz,
who made it all possible by donating the rights to her late
husband's works to start the Malt. Foundation. She read the
manuscript of Psycho-Cybernetics 2000 with great joy, enthusiast
cally contributing a Foreword, which follows. Sadly, Mrs. Maltz,
died on March 16, 1993. Her long and full life ended secure in the
knowiedge that she had successfully passed the torch from Dr.
Maltz.to the Foundation and that the Psycho-Cybemetics message
would live on.
