Dieser Band eröffnet, mehr als anderthalb Jahrhunderte nach der Ausgabe von Martin Hertz in den Grammatici Latini (II-III 377), die neue kritische Edition der monumentalen Ars Priscians aus dem mauretanischen Cäsarea, des umfangreichsten und vielschichtigsten grammatikalischen Werks, das aus der griechisch-römischen Antike überliefert ist. Es wurde im Jahre 526-527 in Konstantinopel von einem Schüler des Grammatikers abgeschrieben, bevor der Text, insbesondere dessen letzte Teile, in endgültiger Form ausgearbeitet war. Auf ungewöhnliche Weise, und zwar aus den von Michela Rosellini im Vorwort und in der Einleitung erläuterten Gründen, beginnt die Publikation mit dem Schluss des Werks, einem sehr reichhaltigen Anhang syntaktischer Beobachtungen, die in Form eines griechisch-lateinischen Lexikons abgefasst sind (GL III 278-377). Die kritische Edition basiert auf einer umfassenden Bewertung der schier endlosen handschriftlichen Überlieferung, für die erstmals die Rekonstruktion eines Stammbaums vorgeschlagen wird, der es gestattet, den Variantenapparat, der die Ausgabe von Hertz schwerfällig machte, sehr beträchtlich zu vereinfachen, Basis der Edition ist ferner eine gründlichere Analyse der Art und Weise, wie der Grammatiker mit der Neubearbeitung und der Komposition verfuhr; der Text wird außerdem durch einen vollständigeren Apparat der loci similes bereichert, der auf die griechischen grammatikalischen und lexikographischen Quellen ausgedehnt wurde. Con questo volume prende avvio, a distanza di più di un secolo e mezzo dalla precedente edizione di Martin Hertz nei Grammatici Latini (II-III 377), la nuova edizione critica della monumentale Ars di Prisciano di Cesarea, la più estesa e complessa opera grammaticale trasmessa dall’antichità greco-latina, trascritta a Costantinopoli nel 526-527 da un allievo del grammatico quando il testo, specie nelle ultime parti, si trovava in uno stato di elaborazione ancora provvisorio. Con procedimento singolare, per i motivi illustrati da Michela Rosellini nella Premessa e nell’Introduzione, la pubblicazione inizia dalla parte finale dell’opera, costituita da una molto ampia appendice di osservazioni sintattiche redatte in forma di lessico greco-latino (GL III 278-377). L’edizione critica si fonda su un’ampia valutazione della sterminata tradizione manoscritta, di cui per la prima volta viene proposta una ricostruzione genealogica che permette di semplificare, in modo molto consistente, l’apparato di varianti che appesantiva l’edizione di Hertz, e su una più approfondita analisi delle modalità di rielaborazione e di composizione adottate dal grammatico; il testo è inoltre arricchito da un più completo apparato di loci similes, esteso alle fonti grammaticali e lessicografiche greche.
