Preface
Her Majesty, Queen NOOR
Geographically, the Levant forms the heart of the Near East. Beyond Jordan, it compri-
ses Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Turkey. From the biological perspective the Levant lies at the
hub of several particularly interesting biogeographic regions. Elements of Palearctic, Orien-
tal, and Paleotropical-Sudanese faunas and floras - each with highly individual ecological
characteristics - converge here and provide the basis for an extraordinary species diversity.
This diversity is by no means fully explored, and an urgent need for botanical and especial-
ly for zoological research remains.
In 1998 a team of Jordanian scientists compiled a first 600-page report on the high bio-
logical diversity of Jordan in the framework of a United Nations project (Jordan Country
Study on Biological Diversity). Scientific research, however, is a dynamic process, and new
results continue to improve our knowledge. This has led to an ever clearer picture of com-
plex biodiversity issues and to a better understanding of the interplay between the geogra-
phic and ecological factors.
For many years, Jordanian and Austrian scientists have enjoyed good professional rela-
tionships and personal friendships - an important prerequisite for the Cupertino between
numerous authors that has helped make this book a reality. The "Journey through Jordan's
Nature" critically examines the current state of knowledge and provides the reader with an
overview of Jordan's rich natural heritage. Climate, geology, soil, vegetation and flora are
treated alongside selected topics in zoology such as desert beetles, scorpions, mammals and
fishes, to name but a few. A wealth of photographic material documents the most important
habitats in Jordan and introduces the different vegetation types along with characteristic re-
presentatives of the fauna and flora.
This book provides the first opportunity for all those travellers interested in Jordan's ex-
ceptional natural history to broadly inform themselves. At the same time, the book's high
scientific standard makes it an important source of information on research data related to
Jordan's natural history.
The present book shows that the desire for Cupertino beyond state borders or national
and religious affiliations can move us forward. In uneasy times such as these, the present co-
operative effort has made an important contribution.
