Mécanique céleste s'appliquant principalement au système solaire, marginalisation d'une tradition astrologique pourtant rémanente, création de modèles, analyse de données..., tout concourt à former les esprits - au siècle des Lumières notamment - à la compréhension du Monde que viennent renforcer les découvertes de l'astrométrie et de l'astrophysique. L'unité du volume, confortée par la variété des sujets traités, doit permettre au lecteur qui n'a pu se rendre à Liège en 1997, d'apprécier l'influence réciproque précoce des deux domaines de la recherche qu'il couvre.
