Josef Langston

Over time many paintings have been done on the kitchen
table and even today many are completed on the patio of
many artist’s homes. A studio is nice but you can make do
with any space that you have. I’m sure many of the old
masters painted in places as mentioned above, ie: Johannes
Vermeer and Caravaggio and look at the masterpieces they
produced.

Mixing colors is another problem for many new artists but it
is not hard, only a challenge since you only have three main
colors to work with. You can get in trouble by buying all the
colors you need instead of mixing them. In mixing the colors
you learn to depend on the primary colors(blue, red and
yellow), the secondary colors can be made from these ie:
red & yellow will make orange. Much can be learned by
reading a book, asking a friend or experimenting on your
own. More important if a color is to loud, to tone it down
use the complimentary color, ie: if a green is not right, use a
little brown or red; if your purple is not right , tone it down
with a little yellow. Little tips like these will help you greatly
as you learn and grow as an artist.

Inspiration is the driving force that keeps us in front of our
easel with our brushes in hand. Go out in nature and paint in
the desert or park which is called “Plein Air” painting.

Enthusiasts now paint all over the country. There is no
greater teacher than mother nature. You do not need a lot of
money for expensive easels and such, just a few brushes,
some paints and paper towels and get started. Studio’s are
fine, but you can learn more outdoors.

I like a disposable palette, one you can just throw away after
you finish instead of having to clean one up.

What I’m trying to say is you don’t need a lot of money to
start painting and enjoying the art of creating your own
Masterpieces.

Frank Garcia is truly El Paso’s painter of memories. He
paints in all mediums from oils to watercolors and his
subjects are ie: highschools, churchs and Rosa’s Cantina.

Frank’s major exhibitions gallery is “Sunland Art Gallery” where he has been a
member for over 14 years. He has served as the Director and has been active in the
success of the gallery over the years. He has a studio at his home where he creates
his beautiful masterpieces.

Frank is a native of El Paso where he began
painting at the tender age of five. He has won
numerous art awards throughout the years. He
studied oil painting with Bill Koliker and also
Robert Massey. Frank’s paintings are mostly done
in oils but he also has worked in watercolors and
acrylics. His paintings depict El Paso historical
scenes, southwest landscapes of American
History, almost all the High Schools in El Paso and
surrounding areas and still life's.

realism transcends
generations, traditions,
“remember whens”, and in
general, the history of El
Paso. Frank was a student art
Instructor at UTEP where he
received his B.A. in Education,
Spanish, and Art. He received
his Masters of Education from
Stephen F. Austin in
Nocogdoches, Texas. His
artistic growth continued as
an Art

teacher in the E.P.I.S.D. schools 24 x 20 Oil $850
and at the El Paso Art Museum. While
being Student Activities Director, he
incorporated his art talents to enhance
the programs for the school and district.
He illustrated textbooks for the E.P.I.S.D.
and conducted teachers' workshops in
Laredo, Texas for teachers to be able to
incorporate art within the regular school
curriculum.

Frank retired after many years as a
teacher and administrator with the El
Paso Independent School District and
now enjoys what he always wanted to
do, paint full time. As a member of the
El Paso Art Association, his paintings
have been exhibited in numerous Art
Exhibits, where they have won many
awards. He has also been invited to
display his works in many venues such
as numerous art galleries and
businesses

FRANK GARCIA
Frank Garcia is one of our better known local artists and is one of the main artist in the Sunland Art
Gallery. He has served as director of the gallery and also the El Paso Art Association.
His use of color, and brush
strokes are a beauty to
behold. Frank employs a
boldness that only Frank Garcia
extremely gifted and
experienced artists
employ. His use of grays in

and displays confidence in
his compositions.

His multi-layered paintings
remind me of the work of

some of the old masters.
The clouds in his paintings
often look better than the
actual clouds we often
have in the high desert.

Frank can be found
painting on Friday
mornings at the Sunland
Art Gallery working as the
gallery manager.

Frank is very generous
when it comes to
donating in support of
our community when they
ask for help in raising
funds for a worthy cause,
and he is a supporter of
the UTEP MINERS.

Frank’s use of cool, diffused grays invoke a sense of isolation and loneliness so that you feel the
water and the breeze thru the cottonwood tree. You can almost feel the shade from the clouds
and can hear the bubbling water in the river.

Olivina Mata

Olivina Mata is an amazing artist, who has
improved greatly in a very short time from
painting a plate of taco’s to painting triple
canopy forests. I believe portraits have
become her strong suit. Whether it’s a
football player, a young girl or and old
man she captures the subjects inner self.
She will only get better as she masters her
colors.
