Thisresourceguideofevaluatedprint andaudiovisualnutrition educationmaterialsis asupplement to
Nutrition EducationResource Guide: AnAnnotatedBibliographyofEducationalMaterialsforthe WICandCSF
Programs,whichwaspublishedin 1982. Thisguide listsnewmaterialsdevelopedsincethepublication ofthe
firstguide.
ThepurposeoftheResource Guide is toassist State andlocalstaffoftheSpecialSupplementalFoodProgram
forWomen, Infants, andChildren (WIC) and the CommoditySupplementalFoodProgram (CSFP) inselecting,
acquiring, and developingaccurateand appropriate materialsfornutritioneducation ofWIC/CSFP
participants.
TheResource Guide focusesonclient educationmaterialswithin the subject areasofnutritionforpregnant,
postpartum, andbreastfeedingwomen, andnutritionfor childrenfrom infancythroughpreschool. Materials
forWIC/CSFProgramoutreach are alsoincluded. Materialson drugandalcohol educationwereexcluded
because theFood andNutritionService (FNS) developed aseparatebibliographyonthistopic.
Eachentryin thtResource Guide includes an abstract, appraisal, and descriptors (or keywords), aswell asthe
title, author, source, format, readinglevel (print materials only), language, and cost.
Allmaterialslistedin theResource Guideare availablefrom the source listed. Contact the sourcetoorder
copies offreematerials or to purchaseitems. The listed materials are also available forloanfrom theFoodand
NutritionInformation Center (FNIC). (Seeinstructions forborrowingfromFNIConpagevii.)
Inclusionofapublication intheResource Guide doesnot indicate endorsementbythe U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA), nor does the USDA ensuretheaccuracyofall informationinthe publication.
Development oftheNutrition Education Resource Guide Supplement
State andlocalWIC/CSFP agencieswere askedtosend reviewcopies ofnutrition educationmaterials
appropriate for theWIC/CSFP audience thatwere developed since the publication ofthe firstbibliography.
Materialswere also solicited from nonprofit, professional, and commercial organizationsthatproduce materials
suitable for theWIC/CSFP audience. Itemsalreadyin the FNIC collectionwere also included inthereview
process.
Allmaterialswere initiallyscreenedbyFNICstafffor availability, appropriate scope and target audience, and
sponsorbias. Tobeincluded intheResource Guide, an item hadtobe available fromthesourceona
nationwidebasis.
Print materialswhich passedtheinitialscreeningwere assessedforreadinglevel usingtheRightwritersoftware
program. Materialswith aFlesch-Kincaidreadinglevellessthan the tenthgradelevelwere evaluated usingan
objective evaluationform. (Note: Occasionallya piecewith a highergradereadinglevelwasincluded, ifother
factors, such asunique subjectmatter,werepresent.) Audiovisual materialswere also evaluated usingasimilar,
butseparate form. Highestscormgitemswere includedin theResource Guide. Most printand audiovisual
materials (excludingpamphlets) whichwerenot included inthisguidewereaddedtotheFNICcollectionand
are available forloan from FNIC.
Print and audiovisual evaluation formswere developedbytheNutrition andTechnicalServicesDivision
(NTSD), FNS,withinput fromrepresentativesfrom theNationalAssociation ofWIC Directors (NAWD) and
FNIC.Theseevaluation forms areincludedinAppendixA.

Duringthe compilation oftheResource Guideseveralnewdietaryrecommendations for thistarget audience
were made. In October 1989the newRecommendedDietaryAllowanceswere releasedbythe Food and
Nutrition Board ofthe National AcademyofSciences. The Scune organization also releasedreports on
nutrition duringpregnancy(1990),which focused onweight gain and nutrient supplements, and nutritionduring
lactation (1991). Materials containingolderrecommendationswere not excluded because:
1. thetime spanwas tooshort fororganizationstorevise materialsbefore the deadline forthisguide,
2. manyofthe materialsHsted maybe revisedwith minorchanges to reflect the newrecommendations, and
3. manyofthenewrecommendationsdid not significantlyaffectthestandard dietaryguidancegivento this
audience.
The newrecommendationsare referencedinAppendixD.
Organization ofthe Nutrition Education Resource Guide Supplement
Materials are listed in theResource Guideaccordingtomajorsubjectarea. The major subject areas are:
Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, Infant Feeding, Feedingthe YoungChild, All Program Participant Audiences, and
Program Outreach. Each section is divided into sub-chapters, includingasection for audiovisuals. Entries are
arranged in alphabetical orderbytitle.
Severalindexes are included to facilitate locatingappropriatematerials. Materials are indexedbytitle,
non-English languages, audiovisual type, and source.
When requestingmaterials from the source, note that manyitemswillbe available for a limited amount oftime.
When solicitingmaterials,we asked that materialsbe available for twoyears from the publication date ofthe
guide. However, the availabilityofmanymaterials dependson agencybudgets, demand for copies, andother
factors.
