Preface
The field of interventional radiology is a dynamic one,
driven by the creativity and ingenuity of its practitioners. At
its core, the field of interventional radiology is based on nee-
dles, guidewires, and catheters. With these tools, we can
delve into the human body to diagnose and treat disease pro-
cesses. In some case, we can even cure patients of their dis-
ease. I know of no other field in medicine that offers such
satisfaction, excitement, and potential.
The purpose of this text is to provide basic principles and
techniques of commonly performed nonvascular interventions
of the abdomen. There are other more comprehensive texts that
explore the latest and greatest that interventional radiology has
to offer. This is not one of them. Instead, this book is intended
to provide a foundation in the “when’s, why’s, and how’s” of
commonly performed nonvascular interventional radiology
procedures of the abdomen. The chapters in this textbook are
presented with this rationale in mind. Ultimately, the goal of
this book is to be a handy and useful reference point for
residents, fellows, and established radiologists who practice
interventional radiology on a daily basis.
