About the book
This reference text covers intelligent computing through internet of things
(IoT) and Big Data in smart healthcare systems. The text covers important
topics, including 5G, wireless body area networks, fuzzy logic optimization
of medical data analytics, communication and detection of sanitation solu-
tions during epidemics, and security and privacy on the internet of medical
things. It is aimed at graduate students and academic researchers in the fields
of electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, and
computer science and engineering. This text covers the applications of inter-
net of medical things and cloud-based artificial intelligence in healthcare
systems and discusses the use of intelligent model for coronary heart disease
diagnosis and IoT approach of managing smart healthcare services. The title
of this book is intended to provide academic and business researchers with a
platform to introduce their new ideas on how current wireless communica-
tion, networking, and detection technologies can quickly address the present
epidemic situation toward healthcare sector caused by COVID-19 to get
better solutions.

Preface
This book is written for the healthcare professionals who wish to under-
stand the principles and applications of information and communication
technologies in healthcare. The text is presented in a way that should make
it accessible to anyone and independent of prior technology knowledge. It
is suitable as a textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate training in the
clinical aspects of informatics and as an introductory textbook for those pur-
suing a postgraduate career in health and biomedical informatics. The text is
designed to be used by all the healthcare professionals, including nurses and
allied health professionals and not just medical practitioners. When I use the
term “clinician” in this book, I am referring to any healthcare practitioner
directly involved in health monitoring and patient care. Those with a back-
ground in information and communication technology should find the book
a valuable introduction to the diverse applications of technology in health
and to summarize the unique challenges of this domain.
With this edition, we have kept the essential backbone of the informatics
story. Part 1 contains foundational chapters that explain simply the abstract
concepts that are core to the informatics. The subsequent chapters then are
built upon those foundations. Part 2 contains a set of chapters that explore
all the main themes of the book from the perspective of informatics skills.
Practicing clinicians must understand how to communicate effectively,
structure information, ask questions, search for answers, and make robust
decisions. Informatics is as much about doing as it is about the tools we use
and these chapters make clear why the study of health informatics is the
foundation of all other clinical activities. We return to each of these infor-
mation and communication system themes in later chapters, taking a more
technological focus. The book has a strong emphasis on demonstrating
what works and what does not work in informatics. We have created a new
evaluative framework based on the value of information that runs through
the book, to help in understanding why some classes of intervention appear
to work so much better than others. Each chapter ends with the content
intended to test the reader’s understanding of the chapter or stimulated dis-
cussion of the material.
