All books—academic, trade, or literary—constitute a labor of love. But
when one undertakes a project on multicultural education, it is not simply
about sales, notoriety, or academic productivity. We write with the hope that
someone will come across these pages and be inspired to change their prac-
tice. We also write with an explicit commitment to those in the margins:
persons of color, persons with disabilities, persons in the LGBTQ commu-
nity, and other minoritized individuals.
To Rose Hinnant, my mother and mentor, I am grateful. As a multicul-
tural educator, who taught the poorest children in the county for more
than 30-years, she inspired my own commitment. I saw her keep her class-
room stocked with toiletries, in addition to culturally relevant texts, as she
met children where they were. It was her passion and example that put me
on this path.
To my beloved twins, Elizabeth Freedom and Elijah Justice, thank you
for your patience with me as I attempt to do good work, even when it makes
me less present in our home. You two remind me each day why the work we
do cannot wait.
To those who pushed for equity and inclusive excellence before it was in
vogue, whose work is the canon for the work we are doing now, thank you
for establishing a firm foundation for us to stand.
And last, but not least, to my Advocate, who showed with the reconcilia-
tory work at Pentecost that our world is one that is meant to be inclusive. I

Adapting to the Changing Demographic
on Today’s College Campuses
When high school graduates walk onto a college campus that first day to
attend freshmen classes, it can be overwhelming. They are entering a new
environment, new culture, and a new normal, while searching for their in-
dividual identity and sense of self. Pile on racial diversity, LBGTQIA,1 and
students with disabilities, as well as differing religious, cultural, and political
ideologies, while adding financial aid and housing issues to the mix, you
have higher education in the 21st century.
This book promotes multiculturalism in higher education, defined as
an ideal setting where everyone is recognized, accepted, and celebrated for
their individual differences and those found within their community2—or
in this book’s scenario—today’s college campus. When multiculturalism oc-
curs, everyone benefits and thrives. Therefore, the aim of this research is
to bring some of the different scenarios of teaching and learning by means
of multiculturalism in higher education—mixed with history, lived experi-
ences, interviews, and solid research—to the forefront, discuss the issues
surrounding the plight of people of color navigating the higher education
