Theorganizersandmyselfwereverypleasedtowelcomeyoutothe8theditionof
theInternationalConferenceonMolluscanShellfishSafety,heldinCharlottetown,
PrinceEdwardIsland,fromJune12to17,2011.
Despitethetougheconomictimes,therewasagoodturnoutwithrepresentatives
from various fields. This allowed us to make this 8th edition one of reflection on
thescientificbasisofrequirementsimposedtothosewhowishtoexportmolluscs,
often developing countries, as well as those economically stronger countries that
wouldliketoimportmore.Theformercanproducemorewithlimitedtechnological
supportwhilethelatterdevelopandrequiretheuseofsophisticatedandexpensive
technologiesfortheirinternalproduction.Managingthisdichotomyisanongoing
challenge and our risk management measures need to find a balance in effectively
minimisingriskwithoutunrealisticcosts.
It is no coincidence that the conference logo features a long bridge – symbolic
of the way people reach one another. Let’s try to keep those bridges open without
requiringexcessivetolls.
We especially wish to thank the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for

C’est avec grand plaisir que les organisateurs et moi-meˆme vous avons accueillis
pour cette huitie`me e´dition de la Confe´rence internationale sur la se´curite´ des
coquillages qui s’est tenue a` Charlottetown sur l’ˆIle-du-Prince-E´douard du 12 au
17juin2011.
Malgre´ un contexte e´conomique difficile, la participation a e´te´ bonne et nous
avons pu rencontrer des repre´sentants de tous les champs d’expertise. Cela nous a
permis de faire de cette huitie`me e´dition celle d’une re´flexion sur les fondements
scientifiques des exigences impose´es a` ceux qui veulent exporter des mollusques,
souventlespaysenvoiedede´veloppement,etceuxquivoudraientenimporterplus,
c’est-a`-dire les pays e´conomiquement plus solides. Les uns peuvent produire plus
aveclesupportdetechnologiessimplesalorsquelesautresde´veloppentetexigent
lerecoursauxtechnologiessophistique´esetche`resqu’ilsutilisentpourleurpropre
production. Les de´fis re´sident dans la manie`re de ge´rer cette dichotomie et dans
unerecherchedel’e´quilibredanslagestiondurisquequipermettedeminimiserle
risquetoutene´vitantlescouˆtsprohibitifs.
