Como afirma el propio Fromm: Mis conocimientos de sociologia y mi interes por ella me llevaron primariamente a aplicar el psicoanalisis a los problemas sociales y culturales and u0026@8230; De ahi vino mi postura critica frente a un entendimiento demasiado estricto de la teoria freudiana, y empece a modificarla. Quise ser fiel a los capitales descubrimientos de Freud, pero sustituyendo su filosofia material mecanicista por una filosofia humanista. El hombre no es una maquina regulada por una quimica de tension y relajacion. Antes bien, el fundamento de mi teoria es este: el hombre es una totalidad y tiene la necesidad de estar relacionado con el mundo.
