Acknowledgements
I began this project while at Elizabethtown College and give
thanks to Joyce Ney for her help in the earliest stages of preparing
this edition. A General University Research grant from the
University of Delaware provided the support for me to travel to
London to access the manuscript of Life in the Sick-Room at the
Fawcett Library and to work in Harriet Martineau archives in
Britain.Special thanks go to Anna Greening,Jennifer Haynes,and
the wonderful staff at the Fawcett Library in London for facilitat-
ing my work with the manuscript. Archivists at the Bodleian
Library and the Dr. Williams’Library also provided essential help
in working with materials relevant to this project. Christine
Penney and Martin Killeen at the University of Birmingham

information related to their wonderful collection, The Papers of
Harriet Martineau -. I want also to express my apprecia-
