Introduction

The Kolami language (referred to as Kolava) of Adilabad District, Andhra Pradesh, India, is spoken by
approximately 40,000 people. The Kolams, have a rich and colourful cultural heritage. Despite the high level of lexical
borrowing, particularly from state-recognized languages such as Telugu, one can clearly see that Kolami is a distinct
language with its own phonological patterns and grammatical structures.

A unique feature of this phrase book is that the phrases are presented multi-lingually and in multiple scripts too.
This will enable learners to learn other languages (and scripts) through whichever language and script they are most
comfortable. An additional use for this book is for literate Kolams who wish to learn how to read and speak one of the
other four languages presented (Telugu, English, Hindi or Gondi).

Due to the complexities of language it is often difficult to obtain an exact word-for-word match when translating
phrases, so we have attempted to communicate the same meaning in each language, even whilst using different words.
There may be ways of improving our attempts, and hence we welcome constructive criticism in order to enhance the next
edition.

Our prayer and hope is that this Kolami Language Phrase Book will assist all those who are genuinely concerned
with preserving and developing the Kolami language and culture, and that these activities will go hand in hand with
development and modernisation within the region.

FOREWORD

The Kolams of Adilabad are inheritors of a splendidly rich cultural heritage. Language plays a vital role in
preserving this cultural heritage for posterity. The Adilabad variety of the Kolami language, known as Kolava, is
spoken by almost ½ lakh of Kolams. In order to further develop and enrich the language, a Kolami Language Phrase
Book has been a long felt need. The present work is a commendable effort to address this need.
This Kolami Language Phrase Book is very useful for learners of Kolami in helping them understand and
address the Kolam people’s problems easily. In addition it is useful to students who already know Kolami and are
learning Telugu, Hindi, English, or Gondi. The Kolami language may be written in a variety of scripts – as
demonstrated in this phrase book – and students may access each language in whichever script they prefer.
It is encouraging to see the enthusiasm with which the Kolam community has embraced language development
activities and therefore it is with great joy that I endorse this phrase book which incorporates many useful phrases,
some basic conversations, as well as grammatical drills to aid students as they embark on a journey of learning. I
heartily congratulate the compilers on their meticulous work and hope that it would be of immense use to the Kolams
as well as other connoisseurs of Kolami.
