Deardelegates,friendsandmembersofthegrowingKESprofessionalcommunity,wel-
cometotheproceedingsofthe9thInternationalConferenceonKnowledge-Basedand
IntelligentInformationandEngineeringSystemshostedbyLaTrobeUniversityinMel-
bourneAustralia.
TheKESconferenceserieshasbeenestablishedforalmostadecade,anditcontin-
ueseachyeartoattractparticipantsfromallgeographicalareasoftheworld,including
Europe,the Americas,AustralasiaandthePacific Rim.TheKESconferencescovera
wide range of intelligent systems topics. The broad focus of the conference series is
the theory and applications of intelligent systems. rom a pure research field, intelli-
gent systems have advanced to the point where their abilities have been incorporated
into manybusiness and engineeringapplicationareas. KES2005provideda valuable
mechanismfordelegatestoobtainane tensiveviewofthelatestresearchintoarange
ofintelligent-systemsalgorithms,toolsandtechni ues.Theconferencealsogavedele-
gatesthechancetocomeintocontactwiththoseapplyingintelligentsystemsindiverse
commercialareas.Thecombinationoftheoryandpracticerepresentedauni ueoppor-
tunityto gainanappreciationofthefullspectrumof leading-edgeintelligent-systems
activity.
The papers for KES 2005 were either submitted to invited sessions, chaired and
organi edby respected e pertsin their fields, or to a generalsession, managedby an
e tensive International Program Committee, or to the Intelligent Information Hiding
andMultimediaSignalProcessing(IIHMSP) orkshop,managedbyanInternational
orkshop Technical Committee. hichever route they came through, all papers for
KES2005werethoroughlyreviewed.TheadoptionbyKESofthePROSEPublication
ReviewandOrganisationSystemsoftwaregreatlyhelpedtoimprovethetransparency
ofthereviewprocessandaided ualitycontrol.
Intotal,1382papersweresubmittedforKES2005,andatotalof688paperswere
accepted,givinganacceptancerateofjustunder50 .Theproceedings,publishedthis
yearbySpringer,runtomorethan5000pages.Theinvitedsessionsareavaluablefea-
tureofKESconferences,enablingleadingresearcherstoinitiatesessionsthatfocuson
innovative new areas. A number of sessions in new emerging areas were introduced
this year, includingE perienceManagement,EmotionalIntelligence,and SmartSys-
tems. The diversity of the papers can be judged from the fact that there were about
100 technical sessions in the conference program.More than 400 universities world-
wideparticipatedintheconferencemakingitoneofthelargestconferencesinthearea
of intelligent systems. As would be e pected, there was good local support with the
participation of 20 Australian universities. There was a significantbusiness presence,
providedbytheinvolvementofanumberofindustrybodies,fore ample,CSIROAus-
tralia,DSTOAustralia,DaewooSouthKoreaandNTTJapan.
KESInternationalgratefullyacknowledgesthesupportprovidedbyLaTrobeUni-
versityinhostingthisconference. eacknowledgetheactiveinterestandsupportfrom
