Abstract
The Hammett acidity functions (H ) of mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium
0
hydrogensulfate with sulfuric acid, and 1-butylimidazolium hydrogensulfate with
sulfuric acid, were measured using UV dyes. A linear correlation between H value
0
and the concentration of sulfuric acid was observed for both mixtures. H val-
0
ues of the mixtures were also measured using an NMR probe, mesityl oxide. The
H values calculated from the mesityl oxide experiments agreed well with the H
0 0
values calculated from the UV dye data. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen-
sulfate, 1-butylimidazolium hydrogensulfate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride,
1-butylimidazolium chloride, 1-butylimidazolium dihydrogenphosphate and 1-butyl-
3-ethylimidazolium acetate were examined as both solvent and nucleophile in nu-
cleophilic substitution reactions with 4-methylbenzyl alcohol. Only 1-butyl-3-ethyl-
imidazolium acetate failed to react. The mechanism of the nucleophilic substitution
reactions of 1-butylimidazolium hydrogensulfate and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium
chloride were investigated using Hammett plots. All benzyl alcohols substituted
via the S 2 mechanism in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, however both the

S 2 and S 1 mechanisms were seen in 1-butylimidazolium hydrogensulfate. Finally,

the structures of hydrogendichloride ionic liquids ([HCl ]−) were investigated using

infrared spectroscopy.

incredibly supportive of me over the years, even though I spent the last eight years
half a world away. Hugs and kisses too to my little sister for her everyday cheerful
remarks that make me laugh.

think I needed that to get through the PhD. The rest of the time Tom is a delight,
and one of the fastest thinkers I have ever met. Thanks to Jason for watching over

rest for being my good friends and colleagues. I shall remember the Holland’s club,
where we talked and shared.
I remember I was so nervous the first day in the lab and was so overwhelmed by
all the complicated instruments that I really thought that if no one watched over
me, I might break everything. So to get to this point, I feel truly relieved, grateful
for all the help that I have received and proud about all the obstacles that I have
overcome.
