Der achte Band des Internationalen Jahrbuchs des Deutschen Idealismus be-
handelt das Thema „Philosophie und Wissenschaft“. Die hier versammelten
Beiträge widmen sich aus verschiedenen Perspektiven dem komplexen Verhält-
nis von Wissenschaft und Philosophie im nachkantischen Idealismus, der Ent-
wicklung verschiedener Themenfelder, die für die idealistische Naturphiloso-
phie charakteristisch sind, der Beziehung der idealistischen Begriffe von Natur
mit anderen konkurrierenden Begriffen sowie dem Idealismus in der Philoso-
phie der Mathematik.
Kants kritische Philosophie reagierte in grundsätzlicher Weise auf die avan-
cierte Naturwissenschaft und Mathematik seiner Zeit und sah es als eines ihrer
wichtigsten Ziele an, einen neuen Rahmen für das Verständnis der philosophi-
schen Basis der Wissenschaft zu entwerfen. Die idealistische Rezeption der
kritischen Philosophie erfolgte ebenfalls in engem Kontakt zur Wissenschaft;
in der Entwicklung einer spezifisch idealistischen Philosophie der Natur sahen
die Idealisten eine ihrer wichtigsten Aufgaben. So ist eine ganze Reihe von
Aspekten der historischen und begrifflichen Entwicklung der idealistischen
Naturphilosophie zu verzeichnen. Unter verschiedenen Perspektiven geht der
vorliegende Band einigen von ihnen nach. Ohne Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit
seien die Hauptgegenstände genannt: Innerhalb einer Dimension, die man
„externalistisch“ nennen könnte, nahm der Idealismus ein besonders starkes
Interesse an der aktuellen Praxis und den Ergebnissen der entstehenden Lebens-
wissenschaften. Er war nicht nur mit ihrer philosophischen Deutung und Er-
klärung befasst, sondern argumentierte auch für die Verknüpfung mit einem
neuen dynamischen Verständnis der Physik. Ein weiterer Aspekt dieses exter-
nalistischen Anspruchs des Idealismus war der Versuch, das Verhältnis der
physikalischen und biologischen Wissenschaften zu den entstehenden Gesell-
schafts- und Geschichtswissenschaften aufzuklären. Freilich beruhte der Deut-
sche Idealismus in vielen Fällen auch auf unterschiedlichen Konzeptionen
dessen, was innerhalb der Philosophie eigentlich als „wissenschaftlich“ gelten
kann. Innerhalb einer „internalistischen“ Dimension findet man demgegenüber
allgemeine Theorieentwürfe und sieht diese Entwürfe mit Mitteln ausgedrückt,
die den verschiedenen philosophischen Systemen je eigentümlich sind. Im Hin-
blick auf diese allgemeinen Entwürfe lässt sich konstatieren, dass die zeit-
genössische Wissenschaft vielen Denkern für das empfänglich schien, was als
Fortschritt in der philosophischen Begründungsform angesehen wurde, wie
zunehmend „spekulative“ Interpretationen von Metaphysik und philosophi-
scher Systematizität. Ein weiteres Beispiel dafür wäre die Auffassung, dass die
Wissenschaft in Distanz zum Denken der theoretischen Vernunft und ihrer
Begriffe gebracht werden müsste, die als grundsätzlich verschieden von prak-

tischer Vernunft und dem von ihr bestimmten Handeln angesehen wurden –
eine Entwicklung, die mit Fichtes Wissenschaftslehre von 1794 beginnt. Das
historische und begriffliche Erbe der idealistischen Naturphilosophie forderte
in der Folge zu weit reichenden Debatten heraus, wie dies unter anderem an der
Kontroverse zwischen dem klassischen Positivismus, dem Neukantianismus
und dem Deutschen Idealismus sichtbar wird.
Allen Beiträgern sei für ihre engagierte Mitwirkung sehr herzlich gedankt.
Besondere Anerkennung verdient die Bereitschaft der Beiträger, dem Anliegen
des Jahrbuchs, systematische Fragestellungen in vergleichender Perspektive und
im Blick auf die aktuelle Diskussion zu behandeln, Rechnung zu tragen.

Der neunte Band des Jahrbuchs wird dem Thema Freiheit gewidmet sein,
der zehnte Band wird Beiträge zum Begriff der Geschichteversammeln.

Preface
The eighth volume of the International Yearbook of German Idealismhas as its
theme “philosophy and science”. The contributions collected here treat, from
multiple perspectives, the complex issue of the relationship of science to philo-
sophy in post-Kantian Idealism, the development of various themes internal to
Idealist philosophies of nature, the relation of Idealist conceptions of nature
with emerging rival conceptions of the same, and Idealism in the philosophy of
mathematics.
Kant’s Critical Philosophy was fundamentally responsive to the most ad-
vanced physical science and mathematics of his day and had as one of its pri-
mary aims establishing a new framework for understanding the philosophical
basis for science. Idealist reception of the Critical Philosophy also viewed
responsiveness to science, and the development of a distinctively Idealist philo-
sophy of nature as its consequence, as an important task. There are many
aspects to the historical and conceptual development of Idealist philosophy of
nature, and volume 8 covers, from a variety of perspectives, several of them. No
list can be exhaustive, but the following are some of the major themes and
issues. Along what one might call the “external” dimension, Idealism took very
seriously engagement with the actual practice and results of the emerging life-
sciences and was concerned not only to explicate them philosophically but also
to argue for a marriage of them with a new, dynamic understanding of physics.
A further aspect of this outward reach of Idealism was to attempt to formulate
the relationship of the physical and biological sciences to the emerging social
sciences. But of course German Idealism is also modeled, in many cases, on dif-
fering conceptions as to what can count as properly “scientific” internal to phi-
losophy. So, along a contrasting “internal” dimension, one finds both general
trends in thought and sees these trends expressed in the vernacular means native
to different philosophical systems. As for the general tendencies, one might
note that for many thinkers the science of the day had to be conceived as amen-
able to what were taken to be advances in philosophical rationality, for instance,
increasingly “speculative” interpretations of metaphysics and of philosophical
systematicity. Another example would be that science would have to be brought
into connection with the shift away from thinking of theoretical reason and its
concepts as fundamentally distinct from practical reason and action, which
begins with Fichte’s 1794 Wissenschaftslehre. The historical and conceptual
legacy of Idealist philosophy of nature is also a matter of continuing contro-
versy and importance, which is illustrated, for example, by the relation between
classical Positivism, neo-Kantianism, and German Idealism.
