edited volumes containing empirical research on multilingual language acquisition,

The Macao International Forum
The Macao International Forum is a research initiative of the Macao Polytechnic
Institute. The goal of the Forum is to bring together leading international experts in
key areas of global inquiry to focus on questions of current intellectual and strategic
significance. It is both disciplinary and interdisciplinary. The Macao International
Forum is held every two years and is a platform for sharing new ideas among lead-
ing international scholars and also for enhancing intercultural communication in the
global context.
Each Forum:
• Addresses the current state of knowledge in the designated area of inquiry
• Considers current questions (theory, methodology, analysis), together with their
interdisciplinary implications
• Presents research to illuminate the present state of knowledge, current questions,
and issues lying ahead
• Recommends and elaborates key questions to inform future directions in the field
• Publishes the results of the forum in book form and appropriate electronic
formats
The first Macao International Forum was held at the Macao Polytechnic Institute
in December 2010. The proceedings were published as English as an International
Language in Asia: Implications for Language Education (Berlin and London:
Springer-Verlag) by Andy Kirkpatrick and Roland Sussex (eds) (2012).
The second Macao International Forum was held in December 2012. The pro-
ceedings were published as Power Transition and International Order in Asia:
Issues and Challenges (Asian Security Studies) (Abingdon, Oxon.: Routledge) by
Peter Shearman (ed.) (2013).

Naming Conventions
In order to respect the authors’ wishes for the order of their given name/family
name, we have adopted a convention which is becoming widely used in Asia when
names from different cultural backgrounds are written in Roman script. According
to this convention, family names are capitalized:

This convention applies only to the Table of Contents, to the title page of each
chapter, to the Introduction, and to the bio-notes about the contributors at the end of
the book. Elsewhere, and especially in the References at the end of each chapter,
international conventions make the identity of given and family names transparent.
Index
Following a growing convention in book production, we have not provided this
book with an index. Most libraries are now purchasing books in e-format, where it
is faster and more natural for readers to conduct their own digital searches.
