I am indebted to several individuals for assistance in this endeavor. Paul Ash-
down and Dwight Teeter, colleagues and coconspirators on other projects,
provided valuable suggestions for improving the manuscript. Dzmitry Yuron,
Natalie Manayev, and Ioana Coman helped mine that seemingly endless vein
of popular media that were relevant to this topic. Foremost, Robert Caudill,
who suffered several years of listening to the triumphs and frustrations as-
