P R E F A CE
This Guide is one of a series of finding aids describing the declassified seized German records deposited in the National Archives.
The series was initiated by the Microfilming Project of the Committee for the Study of War Documents of the American Historical Association
in cooperation with the National Archives and the Department of the Army. With the termination of the Microfilming Project in July 1963,
the National Archives assumed sole responsibility for the reproduction of records and the preparation of Guides.
This is one of a number of Guides projected to describe the records of the German Army field commands. These records are being micro-
filmed in five groups: Records of Army Groups, Records of Armies, Records of Corps, Records of Divisions, and Occupation and Other Records.
Constituting Part VII of army records, this Guide describes the contents of 263 microfilm rolls reproducing the records of the Eigh-
teenth Army for the World War II period. While the bulk of the records covers the campaigns on the Eastern front, operations in the West in
1940 are also described to some extent.
The provenance of the documents-cbscribed in this Guide is attributed to the Eighteenth Army, although a large proportion of the docu-
ments were retired by AOK 18 to the Heeresarchiv Potsdam for permanent retention. At Potsdam an accession number was stamped or written on
the cover, and it is by this numbering system that the folders were organized in the World War II Records Division and its predecessor, the
Departmental Records Branch of the Department of the Army. All folders that had not gone through the Heeresarchiv accessioning process before
capture or had never been retired to the Heereaarchiv were given folder numbers in an extension of the Heeresarchiv system using numbers above
75,000, but otherwise following the Potsdam pattern. Considerable information on the fate of German military records during World War II,
especially on several fires with subsequent efforts to reconstruct the files, may be found in the records of the Chef des Heeresarchivs in the German
Army High Command. (These records were filmed in T-78, Rolls 1-38, and are described in Guide No. 12 of this series).
Descriptions of AOK 18 documents were prepared on cards. Each card has been filmed before the document it describes. The cards for
all documents on one roll are also filmed at the beginning of that roll. This Guide contains the text of the cards.
A short unit history and an organization index by staff section (Abteilung) precede the file item listing for each army. The unit
history has also been filmed at the beginning of each roll of the unit's -records.
At the time of the initial filming of the records described in this Guide, documents that were security classified were excluded.
Since then, the documents have been declassified and descriptions of them have been included in the Guide. Although the declassified docu-
ments have been inserted in their proper numerical order in the "File Item Listing", the roll and 1st frame numbers will be out of numerical
order.

The term "Roll" in the Guide refers to the sequences of the film. "1st Frame" gives the frame number of the first page of the
folder. The "Item ^lo." is the identification symbol on the original folder. The "Item" provides (a) the abbreviation of the staff
section that originated the document, and (b) the title appearing on the document cover or other information providing a general idea
of the contents of the item.
The original records have been returned to the Federal Republic of Germany, The microfilms have been deposited with the
Exhibits and Publications Division, National Archives, Washington, B.C., 20408, as microcopy T-312.

Project under the supervision of Dr. Willard Mien Fletcher, Director of the Project, and in part by Anthony Grassl and Petronilla
