Abceteris speciebus generis Goniothalami rhipidiis usque ad 1.5m basi caulis gerentis
differt.—Typus: Coode 6060 (Kholo;L iso),Central Sulawesi,c. 1° 09'S, 122° 31'E,
Luwukarea,inland from Batuiand SesebaonBatuiRoad,50 malt.
Treelet upto 7.5m high, c. 12 cm in diam.Young brancheslightbrown, striate.
Leaves membraneous,oblong, 12-30cm long, 4-10cm wide, shortly andbluntly
acute toacuminate,base cuneate,margin somewhatundulate,glabrous, midribchan-
nelledabove, strongly prominent below, secondary veins 12-16pairs, enclosing
withthemidribanangle ofc.50°, interarching c. 4mmfromthemargin,reticulation
faintandlax, petiole 8-15mmlong, glabrous. Flowersborneon leaflesstwigs more
or less atground-level orjustabove, infew-flowered, up to 1.5 m long rhipidia.
Pedicels upto 1.5 cm long, withtwobracts atthebase.Sepals connate atthelower
part,ovate,acute, membraneous, glabrous on bothsides, c. 3mm long, outerpetals
membraneous,ovate-lanceolate, up to3.5cm long, upto 1.5 cm wide, very shortly
clawed,pubescent outsideandinsideexcept theverybase,keeled, innerpetals much
shorterthan outer ones, triangular, upto8 mmlong,6mmwide, with scatteredlong
hairs on theinner side.Stamens numerous, apex of connectiveconvex, pubescent,
ovaries glabrous; style bilobed, glabrous. Fruitletsknobby, achene-likein shape.
Etymology —Namedtocommemorate theopening oftheVanSteenisBuilding by
HerMajesty Queen Beatrixon June 11, 1996.
Distribution Knownonly fromCentralandSoutheastSulawesi.
Habitat & Ecology —On corallinelimestoneor serpentine, on slopes ofsteep
valleysfrom50to 1100maltitude.
Note Thelong rhipidia atthebaseofthe stemis anexceptional featureforthe
genus Goniothalamus,usually bearing solitary flowers. However, thereis a certain
tendency tocauliflory andsomespecies haveseveralflowers developed atthebaseof
thetrunk. Long flagellae, up to 10m long, were describedso faronly fromDuguetia
sect.GeanthemumfromSouth AmericaandPolyalthiaflagellaris fromBorneo.
