EDITORIAL
Dear friends of Giuliana Ricama, this has been undoubtedly the
most diffi cult editorial to write.
As you have already probably learned from social networks,
Giuliana Ricama’s adventure will end with this number 47 issue of
July-August 2022.
More than an editorial, it will sadly be our farewell letter.
The epilogue is very simple: the company is no longer able to bear

#go beyond
It is with extreme regret that we are writing this article knowing that it will be the last on Giuliana Ricama.
We have come a long way together in the eight years of the newspaper’s life. The Corporation was formed
as a result of a need felt by many, thanks to the magazine, which was the aggregation engine that got the
ball rolling to fi nally reach a common purpose for the protection of the Thread Arts in Italy.
Changing times are increasingly moving the needs of each one towards ephemeral and immediate choi-
ces, in place of looking for inspiration, ideas, and advice in magazines. The Internet has profoundly chan-
ged our lives, for better or for worse. We have to take note of this. As we greet our readers from these
pages, we hope they will continue to follow us through social networks, blogs, and fairs, and to share with
us the common passion and joy of having embroidery experience, ability, and skills.
However, we want to take the Thread Arts beyond its confi nes, to make sure that our world is known and
recognized even by those who do not know of its existence: it is one of our main purposes.
The fi rst step was to bring the Thread Arts out of the exclusive world of the hobbyists, by setting the an-
cient, technically perfect embroidery, and the playfully imperfect modern one, into a contemporary art
exhibition. It is not easy to make people talk about the Thread Arts, but stubbornly, we have succeeded. It
is an opening that we hope is the start of a new way of looking at our arts in the long-term. Going beyond
the hobby, we can begin to regard Threadwork as an Art, and are the fi rst to recognize its importance.
In fact, it is essential that we be the fi rst to consider the changes in our works and our achievements. We
could actually start to evaluate their worth and therefore change their course, instead of thinking that
since the Thread Arts have always been considered a minority, they are really so.
They are valuable in terms of art, knowledge, culture, and well-being. How
many times, have we been fascinated by the technique of ancient embroi-
dery and have asked ourselves, “How did they do it?” How many times in
front of a lace or woven piece of local or foreign artists have we thought that
in other countries there are more possibilities of expression for the Thread
Arts, and also more recognition?
Well, the diff erence lies in us. We should be the very fi rst to think diff erently
about the Thread Arts. Using the thread should no longer be only a means
to embellish a sheet, but a real means of artistic expression. The Art Exhi-
bition “Sussurrato tra le pieghe e i punti” (Whispers between folds and
stitches) held in Asolo (TV) throughout the month of May 2022, could be
the turning point to the start of a new path.
This summer we will also engage in books. We will participate in the Marsala book festival “IL MARE,
colore dei Libri,” (The Sea and the colour of Books), with a stand that will exhibit exclusively Thread Art
NEWS
books. It will be a world other than ours,
and where we want to bring our contribu-
tion to testify to the ferment, creativity, and
richness of the yarn proposals. In the stand
we will also insert a book made up of your
pages. We hope that this initiative will be
the beginning of a long collection of arti-
facts, which will remain as evidence of the
skills of our time.
Everyone can participate with any threa-
dwork technique, from embroidery to lace, weaving and non-sar-
torial sewing, regarding any subject, and any colour. The only fea-
ture required is the maximum format A4 21x29 cm, to allow us to
bind the book correctly.
We intend to bring the book to fairs, conferences, and meetings
around Italy and possibly abroad. It will be a way of ensuring our
presence, and leaving a sign of our passion, skills and knowledge
for posterity. All the documents received will be included in the
book, without distinction. For this reason, we would like to request
that the dignity and activity of
each one be respected.
We also ask you to involve
children. With their ideas and
skills, they are aware that they
are part of an adult project,
which we hope will become
theirs in the future. The seed
may sprout to continue our pur-
pose.
ADULT TRAINING
It is an arduous task to go beyond the confi nes of hobbies, to enhance knowledge and let people know how
much movement there is around our Art. It is diffi cult to make it clear that continuing education for adults
is one of the aspects of our job, but the results are comforting. Last May, in the Salone dei Cinquecento of
Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, together with Geapolis we obtained further recognition for what we have
done for the education of adults. We were taken as an example - perhaps the only ones in Italy - for having
participated in the course “Evaluation and quality assurance in education and training” in 2021 which
allowed us to obtain the European Certifi cation for the evaluation of adult education, which we discussed
in the Giuliana Ricama no. 41 and 42 editions. Our group was made up of Thread Arts, Theater, Psycho-
logy and Adult Education: a mix that served to demonstrate that networking, fi nding commonalities, and
collaborating are essential to achieve results.
So let’s start evaluating ourselves to understand how much expertise we have, uphold our professionalism,
and think that #ilvaloredelgroup (group value) is wealth that allows us to multiply our abilities, work for
a common goal, obtain results in a shorter time, and minimize errors. Being part of the Arts Guild means
all this and having freedom in making decisions, knowing that the support of the trade association is avai-
lable whenever necessary, but without any obligation.
We are thus able to face the program drawn up at the start of au-
tumn for the entire following year. It is prepared together, and we
establish the individual commitments or the Corporation, to allow
all to work in serenity, organizing at best the individual or group
presence in every event that can enhance the visibility of each one.
This year we will be very busy, starting from late July in Marsala and
Caorle, above all with the beautiful autumn fairs in which Valtopina
will inaugurate the season. After two years of encumbrances, we will
fi nally participate with the stand of the Corporation, as well as with
the individual stands of many members. In our space, we will exhibit
the book PAGINE DI FILO/Threadwork Pages, where our members
will give free demonstrations and paid courses in many techniques.
It will be a meeting space for many thread enthusiasts after a so-
mewhat dark period that has revolutionized our lives and changed our habits. Our hugs will fi nally be
possible and not just virtual, with the warmth and joy that has always
characterized this event over the years.
You will fi nd us in Rome, at the end of September in Abilmente, where
we will bring an additional proposal to the Fair which in recent years
has particularly felt the lack of embroidery. The world of Lace, alrea-
dy present with the Etra Association, will therefore be enriched by a
long-desired mate.
We are sure that our presence in Rome can give a new impetus in a
part of Italy where there is a great demand.
ART WORKSHOP
We are pleased to announce that next October, during the Abil-
mente Vicenza fair we will be able to organize the ART LAB for
all those teachers who are waiting to do it, to test themselves
and to demonstrate their skills.
Once again we are happy that many have seen the importance
of the assessment, recognition of skills, and the teacher-warran-
ty through the Quality Certifi cate and qualifi cation of the ser-
vices provided, issued only after teachers have demonstrated
their own abilities in practice. If you are a teacher we invite you
to participate, request information, and come and have a look
if you are passionate students. Seeing so many skilled hands
together will be a beautiful moment!
SEE YOU SOON!
Once more, we want to underline how important it is to keep up with the times, off er guarantees to
the public, be an active part of a group, and obtain recognition of one’s professionalism, because it is
no longer enough to be very good at executing works, closed up in one’s skills. New technologies are
now an essential part of our lives, and continuous training will be increasingly required, especially in
view of the new European objectives. It is no longer the time to think, “we have always done this, so
we can continue,” or think that the market will return to what it used to be.
Our constant commitment is to make available to our members free courses in threadwork techni-
ques, computer science, technical English, administration, and graphic composition, because stan-
