Preface
This volume of essays on German narrative literature of the twelfth and thir-
teenth centuries commemorates the sixty-fifth birthday of Professor Roy Albert
Wisbey on 13 June 1994, and with it his unwelcome departure from the Chair
of German in the University of London at King's College. To express the
inadequacy of any tribute to Roy Wisbey's many-faceted career is no mere
'Demutsformel' on the part of the Editors, for they can only voice sincere
regret that space did not allow for additional contributions to be solicited from
many other colleagues in Britain and abroad associated with Roy Wisbey in
different aspects of his professional life. Those who have been privileged to
collaborate with him as colleagues, pupils, or administrators rapidly become
aware that such collaboration frequently extends beyond its immediate subject
to form a bond of personal friendship, and soon afterwards realize that this
bond is but one ramification of a network encompassing other fields of endeav-
our altogether.
After school at Bishop's Stortford College, Roy Wisbey went up to Queens'
College, Cambridge, in 1949, having already heralded his teaching career with
a period of National Service in the Royal Army Education Corps. Obtaining
First Class Honours in French and German in Part I of the Modern and Medi-
eval Languages Tripos, and again in German in his Part II, he proceeded to
Frankfurt to study under Julius Schwietering for his Dr. Phil, degree with a
thesis on Das Alexanderbild Rudolfs von Ems. His first university post was a
Research Fellowship at Bedford College, University of London, in 1955-56,

followed by two years as Lecturer in the University of Durham, before re-
turning to Cambridge in 1958 to an Assistant Lectureship, then Lectureship, in
Medieval German Literature, concurrent with a Fellowship of Downing Col-
lege, appointments held until his move to his University of London Chair in
1971. It is characteristic of Roy Wisbey's apparently indefatigable vigour that
for most of his time at Cambridge he served as his College Director of Studies
and Librarian, and left a permanent mark on the University and on the direction
of his own scholarship through his founding in the early 1960s of the Literary
and Linguistic Computing Centre. His Directorship lasted until his departure
for London and provided, in the early days of computing, an unrivalled stimu-
lus to the production of electronically generated concordances and word-indexes
in the field of medieval German and elsewhere. From 1960 until 1963 he
served as Honorary Secretary of the Modern Humanities Research Association,
becoming Honorary Treasurer in 1963. Holding this office throughout his
Cambridge and London appointments to the present, he transformed the As-
sociation into the only British-based learned society representing English and
the modern languages which, apart from the British Academy, combines aca-
demic prestige with financial substance. Among his countless administrative
tasks in both College and University in London should be singled out his
Honorary Directorship of the Institute of Germanic Studies from 1985 until
1989, a period during which he organized and participated in a plethora of
international colloquia on medieval and other literary topics which formed a
genuine impetus to research and in every case led to publications of remarkable
quality. Such achievements were recognized by the award in 1987 of the
Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany
(Verdienstkreuz erster Klasse), and in 1988 of the Großes Ehrenzeichen für
Verdienste um die Republik Österreich.
Perhaps Roy Wisbey's greatest achievement lies in the fact that, notwith-
standing the diversity of his other activities, all pursued with characteristic zest
and in themselves astonishing for a medievalist working in the conditions of the
universities today, his commitment to medieval German scholarship has re-
mained intact. It is characteristic of his Aristotelian pragmatism that the con-
