Probablythemost widelyaccepted classification ofrarityis that ofRabinowitz, which reflects three spatial charac- teristics:populationsize,ecologicalspecialisationandgeographic range. Someauthoritiesinclude the frequency ofoccupancy in suitable habitats. Temporal rarity also is a consideration. Some speciesarecommon followingfire butbecome rarewithtime, asconditions change andbecome unsuitable - untilafterthenextfireevent.
