worked Experimental Flt Test at McDonnell-Douglas on the F-4 J,YK & YM. These things
were no comparison to the 6. Was MA-1 CC on 72-537 and 80-902. Really hurt to see they
both were shot down. What a waste.

dealt with the pilots, great bunch,Col Bridger. The 106 was a pretty plane in flight,especially
on a test flight after maintenence, going vertical right after lift off. Great times, wish we made
more money so we could keep denis vance’s 57 chevy on the road more. Buckroe Beach

I was with the 48th FIS at Langley AFB 1966 - 1968 and was an Armament Specialist on the
F-106. The F-106 was by far my favorite plane and I wish they were still flying. I was sent to
Korat AFB (F-105s)in 1968-1969 and finished my enlistment at Craig AFB (F-15s)in
Operations in 1970. I would love to hear from anyone I may have served with during that

Jerry, You seem to be very popular righ now. Milt Bohnam and I were in the first MA-1
Systems class at Hughes and went to the Edwards Test project for 6 Months also. We both
lived in Mojave while there.. Your name is very familiar to me, but I can’t place you. Were
you a radar or computer guy?
I remained on the Six for the rest of my 20 and ended up Det Commander on a Trianing
Detachment for transition to the Six at Atlantic City the NJ ANG. Would like to hear from
you!

I was assigned to the 27th FIS at Loring AFB, Pneudraulic Shop from 1966-1970. I was there
for the Armed Forces Day "incident" when our bird had a landing gear malfunction. The irony
is that they had just gone through a simulated emergency demonstration for the public when it
happened. Great landing. Took the wings off, put it on a rail car and shipped it back to the
factory.
My first Commander was officially named Lt. Colonel Bernard H. Barton. He had a
handle-bar mustache and rumor had it that he ate champagne glasses at parties.

Hi to all former members of the 5th. I was stationed at Suffolk County Airbase in 1955-57.
That is when we had F-86D’s and I was the Crew Chief of 237. The other Squadron on base
was the 2nd. FIS. We changed over to the 52nd. CAMRON in ’57.

The F-106 was the Best of the Century Series Aircraft. Its looks like it going supersonic
setting still. Love your website, didn’t realize its costs 61 billion to build it. It was worth every
penny; it keep the Russians out. They should have built the Mach 3+, F-106, with updates it
would probably still be in service. The pure F-106 Interceptor was the best. Being a airplane

I served with the 84th FIS as a 43250 Jet engine mech. at Hamilton Ca from Jun. of 1970 until
Feb 1972. Worked unscheduled maint. with a great group of guys. Was engine run qualified
by Jim Cubley a cilivian instructor at the time. It was really a great life experience, and I was
proud to serve in the USAF.
The F-106 was the second delta wing I worked, the first being the F-102 at Naha,Okinawa
with the 82 FIS [51’st FMS] from 1968 until 1970. Of the two the 106 was my favorite.
Launch and recovery at night was a real treat.

I didn’t fly, but was stationed at Loring in 67-70, and had a neighbor or two who flew 106s. I
remember an Armed Forces Day show, where one of the four 106s that were doing formation
flying, wound up not able to drop his left main gear. They didn’t announce what was going on,
but I got suspicious when they foamed the runway. I shot a short clip via a super-8 movie
camera. I heard it went back to the depot for repairs, and flew again. I never knew the tail

I really enjoyed this site. I was assigned to the 48th in Sept ’81. I only was able to work on the
106 a few times, before the F-15s started showing up from the 1st (A-Shop). I was shocked to
see Bob Wegeman’s picture with (59-0145), of course. He lived across from my in the
barracks for maybe 2 years. Bob was a Weapons troop turned Crew Chief, and 145 was his
baby. He would go in and take care of his jet on the weekends. Not because he had weekend
duty, but because he loved being a crew chief. Oh, and don’t call his jet a pig unless you’re
looking for a fight. Great website!

I worked as the Environmental / Safety Officer with Lockheed Martin Aerial Targets at
Tyndall. The ’six’ was a gracefull drone. Five of the crashed damaged drones were placed as
reef’s in the Gulf of Mexico off of Panama City. I was the project officer responsible for
preping them and getting approval to sink them. The photo of them coming off the barge was
taken by me on the second drop.

Hey Folks, the 1st time I saw a F106 was at Loring AFB Maine in 68. I was a munitions troop
on B-52’s then. I never believed that I would be working on the same tail #’s at NAFEC
(177th FIG Jersey Devils)in Atlantic City N.J from 1973 to 1988. I was a Munitions
Loadcrew Chief and Egress tech & Trainer on AC 90023 & 90240, great seeing pictures of
both. Decided to retire soon after the F106 left for good. The F-16 just didn’t have the class
that the Delta Darts did.

I was a MA-1-ASQ-25 weenie from 1963-1971. Spent first assignment with 539th at McGuire
then went to Tyndall when 539th disbanded. Cross trained out of MA-1 into flight simulation
in 1971. Loved the six and went TDY from Tyndall to Korea supporting 318th in 1968.

See some sources (British of course so their reliability is probably about zero) that claim the
Six carried the AIM-26 in addition to the AIM-4 and AIR-2A. I never saw one doing so, but
then my memory only goes back to around 1970. Would be curious if she ever did. One of
these days will have to donate some William Tell stuff to fill out your page. Thanks in
advance for any answers.

Guys
I was a worked on the Six’s for three years from 64 to 67. I was at Mc Chord and Paine Field
with the 498th.
Paine Field was good duty because we had most our planes under cover. It helped alot on
those cold rainy nights in the winter. Most of my time I worked nights. Fly them days and
work on them at night.
I was told the B models were faster. I was wondering why they used A’s for the speed record.
I was crew chief on 509 a B model. We sent it out on special assignment to chase B-58’s. The
engine was trimmed up and it came back with half it’s paint gone. I always wonder exactly
what my plane was doing?

I served 4 years (to the day) in the USAF. All of it but 10 mos. in OMS at Castle (KC135A’s)
then at Andersen on (B52D’s).
The F106 is one of the most beautiful interceptors ever created. Saw them at Castle. But at

Andersen they were transitioning to Vietnam (’69 through ’70). I used to love seeing them
come in and peel off entering Base and Final approach. Such a graceful bird!! It really hurts
to see ALL of them being destroyed as Drones over the gulf of Mexico (I know, we have to
test our missles, and pilots!, but it hurts nevertheless) They should keep a handfull in flyable
condition instead of gate guards and on pylons as displays on bases). Great website!!!

I love the F-106. I had a chance to visit an airbase with my dad when I was a kid and watched
several take off. WOW! Also,back in 1982 I think, I watched a flight of F-106s coming back
home with a tanker over Cape Cod. I’m a science fiction writer and I even managed to

Was at Dover AFB with the 95th FIS November 1969 - Sept 1971. Would love to hear from

Great website I was at castle in the 84TH FIS PE Docks 74-76,Then Kunsan for 1 yr on F-4’s,
came back to Griffis in the 49th FIS 77-79.This brings back a lot of memories.Thanks

AJ, I don’t believe the F-102B ever flew under that designation. The seventeen original
F-102B’s ordered by the USAF in Nov 1955, serial numbers 56-0451 to 56-467, were all
ear-marked exclusively for testing, the first prototype to be delivered in December of 1956, It
was re-designated as the F-106A in June 1956 prior to first delivery, which was aircraft
56-0451. 56-0451 made it’s first flight, the first F-106 flight, on 26 Dec 1956.
