The idea of organizing an exhibition devoted to the photo¬
graphic work of visual sociologists and anthropologists was
first presented to me by Howard Becker, Professor of Soci¬
ology, in fall 1979. I spent time becoming familiar with the
material and quickly learned that the world of the social
scientist, particularly when photography is the research
tool, is indeed most fascinating. Exploring Society
Photographically thus developed and Professor Becker be¬
gan his search for significant scientific, artistic, and cultural
projects to include in the exhibition and in this publication.
