First of all, I would like to thank everyone who provided me with valuable
background information on aspects of the peace process. This work would not
have been possible if it were not for the willingness of various politicians,
officials and diplomats to share their personal insights on the events that took
place. For obvious reasons, most of them did not wish to be publicly
identified. Nevertheless, my sincerest appreciation goes to them all.
Next I would like to thank all those who shared their thoughts on what was
happening and helped me refine my own thinking. Again there were many
people who played an important role in this process. However, I would
especially like to thank Jan Friederich, senior editor at the Economist
