The MRCGP exam and Summative Assessment have now

merged to become the compulsory nMRCGP and with this has
comeachangeintheformatofthewrittenexam.RatherthanPaper1
and Paper 2 there is now a single Applied Knowledge Test con-
sisting of one three hour exam. There has also been a move to
computer-basedtests,sohopefully,nomoreconfusionwithques-
tionnumbering.
Thequestionsthemselvesremainsimilarinformat,butwehave
updatedthiseditiontoincluderevisedguidelinesandaddedinsome
questionsonrelativelynewtopicssuchaspractice-basedcommis-
sioning.

Wehavewrittenthisbookasweweresomewhattakenbysurprise
by the recent changes in the Summative Assessment MCQ exam
1
andtheMRCGP MCQexam.
In the last few years the question format has changed from the
standardtrueorfalseMCQsthatweknowandlove,tothemore
involvedandlessguessableEMQs(extendedmatchingquestions).
Wehavelostnegativemarking(hurray),asthiswasfoundtobea
confoundingvariablewhenusedforassessment.
This book is designed to familiarise you with the types of
questions to be found in the new exam, and also to cover good
exam technique in order to optimise your results with the know-
ledgeyouhave.

About the exam

nMRCGP
1
The nMRCGP is a modular exam with three components. The
Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) is a computer-based multiple-
choicequestionexam.
. Duration:Theexamlastsforthreehours.
. Numberofquestions:Thereare200questions.
. Passmarks:Thepassmarkvariesbetween63%and70%but
the pass rate is good. Approximately eight out of ten people
pass,sothechancesarethatyouwillbeinthismajority!
Content of the exam
This is based on the General Medical Council’s document Good
Medical Practice (2001), which sets out seven broad headings as
follows.

About the authors
HayleyDawsonandAnnaTrigellqualifiedfromImperialCollege
School of Medicine in 1999. Hayley joined a vocational training
scheme in Barnet, North London, and Anna split her vocational
training between St Mary’s, Paddington and Addenbrookes,

Cambridgeshire. They both sat the MRCGP Examination in
2003 and both achieved a pass with Merit in the multiple-choice
component(Paper2).
