The papers included in this volume were originally presented at the confer-
ence ‘Periodical transfers: Eighteenth Century Journals as Agents of Change’. It
was organized at Bogstad Manor outside Oslo in June 2013, under the auspices
of the research project ‘Diversifying Publics and Opinions under Censorship:
The Journals of Eighteenth-Century Denmark–Norway 1720–1814’. This project
was financed by the Norwegian Research Council (2010–2014). The University
of Oslo and Fritt Ord (The Freedom of Expression Foundation) provided addi-
tional financial support, without which the conference could never have taken
place and this volume could never have seen the light of day. The members of
