DEDICATION
I am honored to dedicate this book to the memory of Sharon Kelley. Sharon was a co-
worker, good friend, and wonderful colleague. We worked together for many years and she had a
great love of the study of the early life history of fishes. Though she possessed no advanced
degrees, she took several graduate level courses and did well in them, and she was a keen
researcher who learned quickly. As a result she published many papers with me and others, as
well as solely authored papers, two of which are chapters in this book. She continued working
nearly to the end of her life on her chaetodontid chapter and almost had it completely finished.
Despite being stricken with devastating cancer, she always had a cheerful outlook on life and was
an inspiration to all of us. We all regarded her as “the sunshine of the laboratory” and memories
of her will always be fond ones.
