Dr. Coulter received the Ph.D.
from Columbia University in 1969,
with a dissertation on the history
of American homoeopathy. Since
that time he has been writing on
scientific, philosophical, and
economic aspects of medicine
and medical history.
He has published three books
on homoeopathy: Homoeopathic
Medicine (1973), Homoeopathic
Influences in Nineteenth-century
Allopathic Therapeutics (1973),
Homoeopathic Science and
Modern Medicine (1980).
Divided Legacy (1973-1977)
is a history of Western medical
philosophy from the time of Hip-
pocrates to the twentieth cen-
tury, treating it as a unified
system of thought rather than a
series of fortuitous discoveries.
Dr. Coulter interprets the devel-
opment of medical ideas as the
product of a conflict between
two opposed systems of thought,
Empiricism and Rationalism.
In 1985 he coauthored, with
Barbara Fisher, DPT. A Shot in
