The Agency's Statute was approved on 23 October 1956 by the Conference on the Statute of the
IAEA held at United Nations Headquarters, New York: it entered into force on 29 July 1957. The
Headquarters of the Agency are situated in Vienna. Its principal objective is "to accelerate and enlarge
the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world".

INTRODUCTION This, the fifth volume of the IAEA's Directory of Nuclear Reactors, is devoted to
Research, Test and Experimental Reactors. It is a continuation of Volumes II and Ill
and covers numerous new reactors, as at present there is more need for a description
of such new reactors than for revised data on those reactors already included in
the previous volumes. ·
The reactors are grouped by moderator, with light-water-moderated reactors
additionally sub-divided into pool- and tank-type systems. The iridividual data
sheets are presented in a manner identical to that in Volumes II and Ill. The
first side gives general information, reactor physics data, and core and fuel
element details. Subsequent sides provide: diagrams of the fuel element and
sections of the reactor (2 sides); information on core heat transfer, control,
reactor vessel and overall dimensions, reflector and shielding,. containment
and cost estimate; a table of research and experimental f!3cilities; a simpli
fied diagram and data on fluid flow. The description of the reactor is con
cluded with a bibliography and remarks. In the case of a reactor of a· type
already described in detail' elsewhere in the Directory, a suitable cross-r.eference
is made and only 'differences and modifications are given. A full alphabetical
index of reactors listed in this and previous volumes is included.
No attempt has been made to provide the complete details required by
specialists interested 'in a particular aspect ,of a reactor project, and the dia
grams are only intended to convey a general, picture of the reactor lay-out.
The presentation makes the Directory a useful source of reference and com
parison for all workers in the nuclear field, for libraries, scientific establish
ments, design offices, etc.
Wherever possible internationally accepted terminology and units have been used
but, to preserve authenticity the same units of measurement were retained as
those in use on the project concerned. At the end of the volume conversion·factors
and nomograms are given to facilitate the conversion of units.
Every,effort has been made to achieve consistency but certain differences may
still remain since the fig'ures were obtained .from various sources. All data, however,
have been either provided or reviewed by the competent authorities in the Member
States concerned.
With the rapid increase of reactor projects and a need to' record changes in
existing ones, an index of reactors, listing only a basic minimum of information,
but easily kept up-to-date, has been issued by the IAEA as an addition to
the Directory of Nuclear Reactors. This Reactor Card Index is composed of
marginal punched cards which are designed to enable the user to select
reactors individually or by one or more of the 66 features (moderator, power
output, fuel, etc.) indexed. Further data may be looked up in the Direc~ory
from the referenee given. New and replacement cards are periodically for
warded direct to the user.
This volume, which is 'the result of a co-operative effort between Member States
and the Secretariat of the Agency, was compiled and edited by Dr. K. Fritz and
Dr. G. Rubinstem' of the'.~,gency's Division of Nuclear Power and ·Reactors. The
continued co~operation of Member States is greatly desired in order to ke,ep
. ·the Direttory up to date and blank data forms are available from the Agency
on request. The Agency welcomes any comments and suggestions for the improve
ment of future editions of this Directory of Nuclear Reactors.
