HCI is a multidisciplinary fi eld focused on human aspects of the development of computer
technology. As computer-based technology becomes increasingly pervasive—not just in
developed countries, but worldwide—the need to take a human-centered approach in the
design and development of this technology becomes ever more important. For roughly 30
years now, researchers and practitioners in computational and behavioral sciences have
worked to identify theory and practice that infl uences the direction of these technologies, and
this diverse work makes up the fi eld of human-computer interaction. Broadly speaking it
includes the study of what technology might be able to do for people and how people might
interact with the technology. The HCI series publishes books that advance the science and
technology of developing systems which are both effective and satisfying for people in a
wide variety of contexts. Titles focus on theoretical perspectives (such as formal approaches
drawn from a variety of behavioral sciences), practical approaches (such as the techniques for
effectively integrating user needs in system development), and social issues (such as the
determinants of utility, usability and acceptability).

Candi K. Cann is a Professor in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core and Religion at
Baylor University. Her research speciality is the popular memorialization of death
from a comparative perspective, ranging from martyrological narratives and memorial
tattoos to virtual memorials on the World Wide Web. Her most recent work is a book
titled V irtual Afterlives , forthcoming in 2014 from the University Press of Kentucky.

Paul Coulton is a Senior Lecturer in Design within Lancaster Universities open and
exploratory design-led research lab ImaginationLancaster. Paul has a background as
a programmer, hardware designer, and game designer and now spends his time
subverting perfectly good technology for his own amusement to create novel games,
playful experiences, and toys. His research often encompasses an ‘in the wild’
evaluation methodology utilising ‘app stores’ and social networks as an experi-
mental platform. Paul was selected as one of 50 most talented mobile developers
worldwide from a community of over 2 million to be a founding Nokia Champion
and the fi rst academic invited to speak at the mobile section of the Game Developers
Conference.

social presence of the dead.

Edina Harbinja is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
Her research is funded by the Horizon Digital Economy Hub, Nottingham, and
forms part of the RCUK-funded Centre for Creativity, Regulation, Enterprise and
Technology (CREATe). As the UK FCO Chevening scholar, she obtained an LL.M.
from the University of Strathclyde and a master’s in IT and telecommunications
law. Her work experience includes working for different NGOs, governmental and
international organizations, and companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Janis Jefferies is an artist, writer, curator, and Professor of Visual Arts at Goldsmiths,
University of London. She is the Artistic Director of Goldsmiths Digital Studios
(GDS). The GDS is aimed at expanding the boundaries of artistic practice, forging the
future of digital technologies, and developing new understanding of the interactions
between technology and society.

Grosso (UFMT) in Brazil, Vinicius researches areas such as semiology, literary
theory, and emerging language practices in technological contexts. His researches
on post-mortem digital legacy started in 2010.

design-based exhibitions.

Angela Riechers The work of Angela Riechers explores the intersection of memory
and media, with a focus on how evolving technology affects the design of systems
and objects we create to preserve ephemeral human remembrance. Angela holds an
M.F.A. from the School of Visual Art’s MFA Design Criticism program, where she
lectures on graphic design and visual culture.
