About Diego de Almagro
<p>Nacido posiblemente en Almagro (Ciudad Real) hacia 1472, marchó a América en 1514. Participó en las campañas de Panamá y en 1524 formó con Pizarro y Luque una compañía para la expansión hacia el sur. Pronto las rivalidades personales y los intereses materiales envenenaron la sociedad. En 1535 se le nombró Adelantado de Nueva Toledo, cargo equiparable al que poseía Pizarro, lo que produjo la ruptura entre ambos. Gastó toda su fortuna en una expedición a Chile. Como no obtuvo resultados positivos, regresó al Perú en 1537. Aliado del Inca, rebelado contra Pizarro, ocupó el Cuzco ese mismo año y tomó prisionero al hermano de éste. Sólo quedaba el enfrentamiento, tras la negativa de ambas partes a alcanzar un acuerdo. Derrotado Almagro en la batalla de las Salinas en 1538, fue ejecutado en Cuzco.</p>
